Favorite tomatoes
    #1759929 - 07/29/03 04:56 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

In the past few years I have become a tomato connoisseur. I love to grow my own and try different varieties every year. I can't stand those crummy hot house tomatoes you get in the supermarket, but we have some great tomato farms near me, and that's what got me started on quality heirloom 'maters.

I only have a little space to grow in 5gal planters on my patio deck, but as soon as I buy a house I'm going to have a big ass tomato and vegetable garden. Here's what I'm growing this year.

This is the Brandy Boy, a hybrid of the famous Brandywine, the most famous heirloom tomato, and considered by many people to be the best 'mater there is. It is pink and has a great sweet flavor. I love to slice one up and eat it with some salt and pepper.

This is the Sweet Tangerine. It is very sweet, but has a bite to it as well. Good to eat plain or on a burger or in a salad. Mine should be ripe by now, but since it was so cloudy and rainy all spring and early summer, they are not ready yet.

This is the Cherry Delight. Much better then the standard cherry 'maters you get in the store. Great in salads or plain, and they last all winter.

Do you guys have any favorite tomatoes or other veggies? What do you grow, or want to grow in your garden?

Green Zebras and those dark purple ones, nice flavor and not too watery. I love those tangerines too!

I'm not familiar with Green Zebras. What are they like?

Mmmmm.  I'm drooling just looking at those pics.  I haven't had garden tomatoes yet this year.  They're like a delicacy.  So good with salt and pepper. :eyemouth:

What I?m curious about: If you have many different tomato varieties in a small space, are the resulting seeds still each its own variety, or are they cross pollinating each other and produce new varieties.

So, if you take seeds from your Brandy Boy, will the resulting plants still be Brandy Boy or will they have something from some of the other varieties you grow?

knew this thread would get your attention!

I have this fantasy image of you in some sort of Austrian castle, with a large NORAD-style command facility, complete with giant video screens on the walls, which constantly monitor the Shroomery forums for posts about the LD50 level of vermiculite or tomatoes.

PS: On a serious note, that is an interesting question...

I use fresh, store bought Burpee's seeds every year, so I don't know about cross pollination. Mabey this year I'll save some of the seeds I get out of my 'maters and see if they are hybrids next year. Now that you've got me thinking about it, I think I'll try grafting different varieties onto each other next year as well to see what happens. It's a damn shame hat tomatoes are an annual and not a perennial, because we could do so much more experimentation that way.

I'll have to check out the tomato forums at gardenweb to see what kinds of hybrids people are coming up with. I'll get back to you on that.

BTW, Pappy, what is the tomato forum here? Did I miss something?

we've got some indian summer pinks going from last year's seeds.

seeds were from a particularly plump and juicy potomac vegetable garden tomatoe.

if these are half as good as that one was . . .

At my parents house they have this big compost bin where all the grass clippings, veggie scraps, fall leaves, weeds, coffee grinds, and all other plant matter goes to decompose and turn into the worlds greatest fertilizer. Every year a few cherry tomato and squash plants grow out of the bin from seeds that went in there from table scraps.

Now, if you know about compost, the bacteria that breaks down plant matter gets up to 160, and sometimes 180 degrees at the peak of the decomposition process. These high temps kill off all of the weed and veggie seeds that go in the bin, but for some reason the tomatoes and squash seeds survive this process and grow to enormous sizes in that pure compost. My parents are never short on cherry tomatoes. They get several thousand every year.

What do you guys feed your tomatoes BTW? I just use pure compost, and then a few infusions of Miracle Grow tomato food 18-18-21 when they start to fruit, but I hate using that chemical salt garbage. Anyone have some better feeding ideas?

I use just compost and Miracle grow myself. But in the my recent growings, I have had problems with some kind of root fungus. I will soon have to change my approach.

can you guys help me?

I have 6 plants.

4 san francisco fog and
2 early girls.

they got started late, and
the soil isn't the best...

conditioned clay with lots
of spent mushroom compost
mixed in.

recently, 1 of the plants has
shown tremendous proliferation
while the rest seem to be yellowing,
browning and otherwise stagnating.

pics:

the whole bunch, in two rows, 4 sfs on
left, 2 egs on right.

here's a close up of the great one with
one of my little gopher killers napping in
its shade.

here's a close up of one of the ones who's
health is deteriorating

any thoughts? blight, rot, bacteria, pests?

I was leaning towards the blight, but
we had a really warm early july, though
without the high humidity...

interestingly enough, it is only the less
densly grown plants that this seems to
be affecting.

hrm... :\
