Air Drying

Is there a loss of potency if cubies are dried throughout in the air
without the use of dessicants? is there any problems with plain air
drying?

Air drying alone is fine, it just takes longer. It helps if you live in an arid climate. Most people (myself included) start with 24-36 hours of fan drying and then finish up with 24 hours in a desiccant chamber.

If you can get them air dryed at room temp there should be no loss in potency

I have never had a problem with potency loss when air drying. I use the same method as dog. If they are monster fatasses I use 2 table fans to dry.

Yep, after they are dry I put them in a zip-loc with one of those little desiccant bags that you find in pill bottles.

I usually leave them in the dessicant chamber at room temp. If you fan dry them well there will be hardly any water left in them and the dessicant will last longer.

P.S. My dessicant chamber is a sock in a mason jar with about a 1/2" to an 1" of damprid on the bottom of the jar. It wroks great.

I believe its Moes Lazy Negro Drying Tek.

trippychick can you elaborate alittle bit more on ur drying setup?? It might sound stupid but ive been trying a couple different setups and either the mesh falls or air gets in or something goes wrong. Im desperate for a working one haha.

i have a fan sitting face down on a wire shelf aimed at a box of wet mushrooms. works fine in 2 days.

Cutting them will speed up process , but technically you lose more "goodness" with this method , theory is the more you bruise them the more potency they lose .
So IMO cutting is a catch 22 .
Here is an easy set up , all parts found at Wal Mart , except for the desicant , found at Ace Harware .

I thought storing shrooms in plastic was a no no. Is that just for fresh shrooms? I thought that plastic is too porous, and in the long run that will be a detriment.

I've had no problems storing in zip-loc bags, but the longest I've stored dried fruits was a couple of months. Fresh fruits require air circulation or they will rot quickly.

You could always buy some cat litter from the store. They have some made of nothing but Silica Sand(dessicant). $10 for about 5lb

Plastic ziploc bags should be fine once the shrooms have no water left in them :laugh:  Fresh ones go black and rot.

Im using the cover of a fish tank aquarium. Its a wire mesh screen. I have 2 table fans blowing on them from oposite directions. After about 48 to 72 hours depending on thickness and length I put them in the dessicant chamber. I use a quart jar with about an inch of DAMPRID on the bottom. There is a sock in the jar which sits about and inch above the damprid. The shrooms are placed in the sock and the jar lid and band are screwed on tight. You are supposed to screw the band and lid over the sock, it seals really good.
