Desiccant and drying questions?

I have some questions about desiccants and drying techniques. The only desiccant I have been able to find is a product called damp rid it comes in a 48 oz paper milk carton looking container. I have read that calcium chloride can be heated in the oven and used over and over again except the directions state that the crystals will completely dissolve. From what I have observed so far are that the crystals bond together as they
suck up moisture and form masses. Would it help the drying process to remove these masses as they form or wait until the whole thing dissolves? Or maybe this a good time to dry it out in the oven. I tried to dry it out in the microwave but this did not work. It formed into one big lump and even caused a chemical reaction that melted the plastic container I had it in. Is this the wrong type of desiccant to reuse or doe?s it have to be dried in a metal pan only in the oven?
I was also wondering is the potency of fruits that much better if they are dried with desiccant in the refrigerat or from start to finish or is potency just as good if they are pre dried at room temperature on a screen over a fan for a couple of days then placed in the fridge on desiccant? It
seems like the pre drying is more effective and gets the bulk of the water out of the fruits much faster. Is placing the desiccant container in the fridge then even necessary if they are pre dried at this room temp or should the drying containers just be kept at room temp? Please give me your info I?d
appreciate anything that would be helpful.

Wildstrain,

From my experience, bulk drying almost requires the use of a pre-drying fan step. If you don't do it, you'll be spending way too much time with the desiccant which I believe is dangerous (bacteria and mold can grow).

Damprid is best used once. If you try to reuse it, you're just asking for trouble. It does in fact dissolve and when you try to dry it out ("try" is the key word here), it doesn't dry out well nor in the original bead form.

My recommendation is to make the damp rid last by fan predrying. Then a $2 or $3 buck carton of 48oz of Damprid will go a LONG way! I've know others who have dried pounds this way without much trouble.

As far as the potency issue, I don't know. Shrooms always blow my socks off and I always have too many, so I never cared if it took an extra 0.5 grams to do the job.

Try fan drying for about 24 hours before you put it in with the dissicant, this will cut your time drastically. I use damprid as a dissicant and it works fine... just use a fork and break up the clumps that it will make every couple of days or so. Seems to work faster if you do that.
