Is a heating pad acceptable way to warm BFR cakes?
    #10519247 -

I am using a heating pad directly under my jars of PE mycelium to keep them in the acceptable temperature range, I have 2 thermometers to get as accurate of a reading as possible. I was just wondering if anyone knows any reason this would be detrimental to the cakes.
Thanks!

I am no way an expert, just a neophyte basically, but most people here will tell you not to heat your brf cakes during colonization.  Normal room temps are sufficient, and further heating will only aid in drying out your cakes, therefor slowing, or stopping the growth of any mycellium.

Agreed. Unless you have extreme weather in your apartment, room temp is probably the best choice.

Alright, would it be better then to let the temp drop as it does at night to around 65?

Uh... I don't know.
My grain jars colonize at temps like that, but I have terrible luck with cakes for some reason. I'll let somebody else answer.

What temps do the jars get to? If you have a remote probe for your thermometer, you could put in a jar of water on the pad, and do a 24-hour check.

If anything at least put the heating pad on top of the jars for an easier warming.  Leaving your jars sitting on a heating pad is not recommended. Using a heating pad at all does not come recommended, but it can be make to work beneficially when it is all you have. Colonization temps are now being recommended between 75F-80F.

i only leave the pad on as little as possible no more than 2-3 hours at a time, mostly at night, I appreciate your help and will begin looking into some other ways to keep a constant temp.

You can place a 40-60 watt incandescent bulb in the center of your jars (like a campfire) and it'll keep them a few degrees warmer.

FAIL!  if you have the heating pad on top of the jars you wont get any fae!  If you are really concerned, get a tit.  I have used one for years and even though it gives me only a few days of quicker colonization, i love it!
