How do I sterilize a cardboard Glove box?
    #10490672 -

So I made a makeshift CB glove box. Was wondering how do I go about sterilizing this badboy? I have completely duct taped the bottom of it, so I'm able to wipe the bottom, should I just duct tape the entire inside to make it easier to clean?

cardboard and wrinkly duct tape will harbor contaminants-  use plastic stretched tightly without wrinkles,  or find a rubbermaid.  wipe with you choice of sanitizers,  probably bleach, lysol/oust, alcohol, peroxide, etc.  keep it totally dry

the very first syringes an only a few inoculations , i have also done in a cardboard box , just swabbed the inside with alcohol  ( so cardboard soaked a bit ) anyway , they turned out to be fine (syringes and inoculations ) , but i decided to step up to plastic glovebox's immediately because it was shabby as hell , and didn't want to lose time with an inefficient glovebox (which is the most important equipment for me in cultivating =)

For the thousands time you do not wipe glovebox's down with alcohol. You dont even need to use bleach or lysol etc. Just wipe it down with soapy water.

Alcohol is a big no no, ive seen too many very bad glovebox explosions to know its a bad idea. And i have experienced alcohol vapours ignite even in open air just because a little bit was spilled on the table. the table didnt light, but a huge fireball in the air.

Even flaming outside of a glovebox which you should be doing anyway, its pretty close to your glovebox and theres still a chance alcohol vapours could ignite quite eaisly through the arm holes.

I have a cardboard glovebox, so far i havnt cleaned it, but i will give it a wipe down soon with alcohol when im not using it just because the alcohol will evaporate. At any point if im going to be using it i would never use alcohol.

Its worked perfectly for me since building which is 7 times. which isnt really much of a benchmark. its better than nothing.

If you have varnish, varnish the glovebox then you can wipe it down.

i swear by this, its so easy to work in. The cling film lid makes it so easy to see inside

As veda_sticks mentioned, sterility is not required when using a glove box. Glove boxes work on the principal of still air - not sterility.

yeah, but I imagine a dirty old cardboard box that's been sitting around who knows where for how long-  might as well at least start with the cleanest space you can get.

The humidity where I live would make cardboard a good substrate for black mold,  especially if it ever got wet, so I wasn't saying try to clean the cardboard, I was saying ditch it altogether.    plastic or glass in my opinion is the way to go.

as far as the alcohol thing,  sorry for not listing precautions, but if you don't have the common sense to know that alcohol vapors in the right concentration plus fire = more fire- well,  maybe find a less mentally demanding hobby.

This is a 7 year old thread dude.

I do see a couple big time errors right off the bat though.

1. You should be using a better filter than micro pore tape. Synthetic filter discs (obviously the best choice) , poly fill, tyvek...  micro pore works fine on Pasty Plates but I would never use it on my grain jars.

2. Yea, youre probably right. If you are putting your unninoculated jars into cardboard flats and then moving them in front of the flow hood without wiping them down that is a huge vector for contamination.

Cardboard tray or not ANYTHING and everything moved in front of a flow hood (or in a still air box) needs to be wiped down absolutely thoroughly with ISO... otherwise you are bringing contams right up in your work space to get blown around.

When using a flow hood you really need to wipe the table surface down (I use a big glass top)  with ISO. You should run the FH an hour before working. You should shower , put on clean clothes fresh from the dryer, gloves, surgical mask etc. Gloves should be frequently washed with ISO.

Everything, especially jars need to get washed with ISO. I sugguest you download the Letsgrowmushrooms videos and watch RR's sterile tek.

Wait a second Im confused- are you not working with grains?

If you are working within low hood, not wiping your jars down thouroughly before placing them in front of the flow is going to be a major source of contamination. Whatever contams landed on the jars while they were sitting in those boxes are going to be blowing in front of the hood.

But if you aren't working with grains- if those are all BRF jars that won't matter as much because youaaren't making grain to grain transfers or even opening the lids to drop agar wedges in.

If you are working with BRF and getting contams than Im almost certain it is your innovulant.
