anybody ever find edible mushrooms in the wild by pics from the net?

Most sources on the net warn you that only a mycologist can properly identify an edible mushroom...

While this is not the same thing, I identified blue meanies as psilocybin before I had ever heard of them or seen pics...I collected them, then referenced them with multiple websites, and sure enough, they were the right thing...

now I have become interested in edible mushrooms, and want to look up the ones that grow wild in my state

Just wondering if anybody here has ever done this?

tons of people mang. Im going on a trip to Mt shasta to hunt some edibles this weekend.

For the last 8 months or so I've read books, surfed the web, and gotten help from this site.  When planning on putting something in my mouth, I do lots of extra research beyond "what is this" and include things like "what are things that look similar and could kill me if I'm wrong."  Typically for mushrooms that are new to me (like, all of them at the moment) I'll eat a small cooked sample and let it sit in my system for 24 hours or so to make sure I haven't royally screwed up before I make a full meal out of something :smile:

To date I've found and put these in my stomach with varying degrees of pleasure:

Leccinum scabrum (birch bolete)
Cantharellus cibarius (chanterelle)
Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster)
Coprinus micaceus (Mica cap)
Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric)

If you're a type of person who doesn't mind being careful before inhaling something, then I'd say go for it! :smile:

yeah I did the same thing when I found the blue meanies...looked up all the deadly look-alikes

ever found any edibles in your yard? (of course this is going to vary by state, but just a  curiosity)

Never in my yard, but the lawn at my work has both the Birch Boletes Amanita muscaria as well as one I forgot on my list that I've eaten:

Chlorophyllum rachodes

Fields beside my yard in GA when I was younger... I was always timid about finding em myself though
