The way I see it, it ispossible that our spirit continues till after death. If that is the case, then I would like to use this time to strengthen my spirit.

It just so happens that the act of strengthening my spirit has resulted in happy experiences that are worthy to me regardless of whether my spirit continues, because quite simply life is more enjoyable when you respect and honour your inner forces.

lots of people say 'well if its true that god exists, you are fucked, atheists!'

but the way I see it, if god exists, it is likely that he wants us to realise our potential here on earth and to simply appreciate the world that he has given us. the first step is to appreciate yourself. To appreicate that even if your free will is predetermined.. somehow... it is still the most you will ever amount to. But once you realise this, you can extend the reaches of your will and thus become limitless

So you think that in order to have a spirit, God must exist?  Would God necessarily know that we exist?

I've read that the precursor to the soul is a supernatural force.  How do we not know that the spirit doesn't already have some relation to the natural world?  But then, how would we figure that out?  I personally feel that God doesn't have to exist for a spirit to exist.

Anyway, the crux of your argument is enjoy my life by respecting and honoring my inner force.  What do you mean by limitless?

no i dont think god needs to exist. It is just that lots of people do believe in god and I just think that if there is a god, the best way to please god would be to strengthen your spirit, experience teh world, and help to continue the parts of the world that are good.

in the absence of god, strengthening your s[pirit lets you become more like a god, essentially.

a good quote from elizabeth 2:golden era (film with cait blanchett)

somethin like

'when the winds of change come, some retreat and close themselves from the world, and hope that they do not die, while others spread their wings and soar'

soaring requires calculated courage... a strong spirit

but its always an option to just try to hide from the world's problems.

but do you want to live in a hovel, in control of dust, or do you want to live in the sky, at the whim of the universe, yet, with the potential to use the universe to fly through canyons and shit.

its a trade-off in life

Mental pushups?

If will power exists, is it free?  Can I avoid misery?

Free will is most likely an illusion, but it certainly seems as if one can make choices that improve one's personal happiness.

I'm afraid that I don't see how I could be free of my ego anywhere.  Jettisoning an ego seems like a myth, a story thats been told so many times that everyone believes it to be true.  Is it true or is it myth?

1. Why do you want to be free of your ego?
2. You could not function in life without your ego.

The left hand path of debauchery and egoistic self-gratification as opposed to the right hand path of abstinence and humility, aye?  I prefer the former.

Lords of the Left-Hand Path by Stephen Flowers, Ph.D. is a pretty good book on the topic.

I'd recommend primarily reading some Aleister Crowley; H. P. Blavatsky and G. I. Gurdjieff are also pretty good.  Also you might want to look into the Aghori.

It sounds like you're confusing spirit with soul.  The difference being that one's soul has some imprint of oneself on it, whereas spirit is universal, undifferentiated, and without attributes.

Spiritual exercise - looking outward.  Completely focus on your senses, starting with the weakest/most neglected.  Close your eyes, completely open up your sense of smell.  Open up your sense of sensation - from the toes to the top of your head, until you feel your whole body.  Then open up your sense of hearing - notice every subtle sound.  Then open your eyes, and melt your senses together.  You are not a thought process - you are a receiver of life, and it's coming to you from all angles right now.  Let it all in and reflect it out.

Spiritual exercise is not looking inward - it's looking outward, receiving life, and reflecting it back out without holding onto anything, immersed in the now.

Well, this left hand path stuff sure is interesting....:strokebeard:

From a brief skimming over of wiki on Aghori:  that's sort of disturbing stuff.  I'm not so sure that I could get past my cultural conditioning in order to embrace their practices.  It's like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom!

So far the most concrete advice yet!
Next time I've got the will to do so, I will try your outward looking exercise.
You know, I've never had much tuck with the idea of being a 'thought process.'  I would more readily agree that I am a space-time event.

So you think that we are all vessels filled with life?  When we are dead do we become an empty vessel?

We are spatiotemporal processes.  Upon death the process breaks down.

Yeah.  'Spatiotemporal' has a nice ring to it.  Does the process ever repair itself.

Not to get off-topic, but what is space/time besides perception?
As for your questions, ask yourself; "Who am I?"

That exercise is from The Present, page 30:
-----
The start of the quest for true life: You start by getting to know just one sense at a time. Start with the ones you have neglected such as your sense of smell. The senses you have not been using to their full potential will take time to wake up; they have been semi-dead for a long time.

Go to a store where they sell toys for kids and babies and buy a few things you had. You definitely want to have one of those red rubber balls used on elementary school playgrounds. Put it in your bed with the other things. You can use them and other things with a pleasant smell from childhood to wake up your sense of smell. It will wake up parts of your brain that have been dead a long time. At first it is best to close your eyes and get that powerful sense out of the mix until you can get in touch with your weaker senses.

Take one sense at a time and spend enough time with each one until you know what they are each like when they are completely open, completely clear.

After you open up your sense of smell, go with your sense of sensation or feeling on your skin. When you can feel your whole body at once, move to your sense of hearing. Keep going from one sense to another until they are all open. Then gradually start opening your eyes and experience them all together evenly balanced. You will experience true life for the first time.

The mind problem: As you concentrate on your senses and try to open and balance them, you become aware of the presence of your mind. You begin to see how it prevents you from receiving life completely and naturally. It will always concentrate your attention on part of what you are receiving, never the whole.
-----

And The Present, page 40:
-----
Spiritual exercise: People exercise to get in good physical shape, and stay in shape. You have to exercise your spirit for the same reason. People should dedicate at least fifteen minutes a day to get in good spiritual shape.

Opposite of meditation: Spiritual exercise is not the same as eastern style meditation; it is the opposite of eastern style meditation. In eastern style meditation, you spend time trying to look “in” completely. To exercise your spirit, you do the opposite, and spend time trying to look “out” completely. You try and experience all that is coming to you though your five senses. The longer you do it and the more often you do it, in better spiritual shape you will be in and stay in. If you spiritually exercise at least once a day, you will wake up for certain; it is just a matter of time.
