Suggestions on how to use a mycobag to spawn to bulk substrate?
    #10409510 -

Hey, guys. I've decently experienced with cubensis... found many wild, moved lots of cow pies to other areas and watered them for an outdoor bed successfully, and also eaten them of course... but never tried starting from spores and growing bbefore.

I ordered one of those The Mad Season mycobags to inoculate just to have an easy, sterile way to start having myc colonize... going to start it in a few days. However, I don't want to just fruit in the bag... Once fully colonized, I want to use that spawn to go bulk and fruit outdoors... either a bed in high grassy area, or possibly in one or two large rubbermaid containers... I live in Florida, so the climate is definitely right for outside...

How would you guys suggest using my spawn to colonize a larger amount of substrate. I will most likely be using coco coir mixed with cow manure as the bulk substrate... I was thinking about something like grain to grain, but not sure exactly how I want to do this... any ideas?

Well G2G would help you get a lot more spawn to start with. But if you are just ordering pre-made bags, I assume you dont have a Pressure Cooker or anything. That would make G2G's a bit hard.

If you're spawning to Manure, I would personally bring the manure to Field Capacity along with the Coco Coir or what have you. Then, either pasteurize all that or just spawn to it with your fully colonized bags.

You probably want some kind of casing layer unless humidity is in your favor down there. I'd use a layer of straw.

I'm not real experienced with the outdoor grows, but they seem like they are much easier than indoors if you are in the right location.

I use filter patch bags and mason jars to knock up rye.  Both work great.  I also use the bags to create a bulk brick of coir, straw and worm castings.  Since the bags are clear, i experience little or no contam due to peeking, unlike i do with my bulk trays wrapped in black plastic.  I keep them in closed boxes in a closet for darkness while incubating in both rye starters and bulk bricks.

Spawn to bulk by breaking up the spawn and mixing together with the bulk sub in the bags.  I do it in open sanitized air without any contam issues.

Definitely do g2g, since the incubation time is quicker than always starting from spores and you can multiply your spawn nearly by a factor of 10.

Create an LC from a cc of spores and you can really speed things up.  I use small baby bottles, which work great and provide enough LC that my spore syringe consumption has been minimized substantially.

Good Luck!

Outdoors does seem to be more easy than indoors... I think I will have no problem fruiting them outdoors. I just need to try to figure out how exactly to spawn to the manure/coir as efficiently as possible to make sure I have a good amount of colonized substrate to fruit.

I have leftover bag of Pro Mix HP (soilless medium for plants... mostly sphagnum peat and a tiny tiny bit of perlite)... do you think that would work well as a casing layer? I think I've read a fairly large amount of people using peat for casing.

I have 2-3 spore syringes and only need about half of one to start up the mad season bag... so, I have plenty of spores left over to try making some LC.

When I go to transfer pieces of my colonized bag to spread to coir/manure, do you think I should do that in smaller trays to start off before eventually moving them to the rubbermaid tubs outside? Should I let them colonize while covered inside or would they be fine outside as long as they were covered to keep humidity high?

I have been successful both ways, placing spawn in sub under my hostas in a ring and placing completed bulk trays directly in earth with a plastic sheet shading the spot.  Outside grows work out the contam problem, but I like to think putting down a contam free cake gives me the best chance to make sure i get it to produce.  The thing i do in either case is make sure i have a casing layer to act as a closer humidity trap.  usually mulch that is very large.  It creates pockets over the myc where they bridge.

Of particular point is that if you have a ready cake when it goes outside, you know it will flush soon.  If you are still colonizing out doors you have to wait for the myc to reach the same point.  The pro for spawning to out door sub and waiting is you do not need to be concerned with the contam issues as much.

I am going to spawn one of my bulk bricks that is not quite 100% colonized this weekend to a pile of shredded straw in a raised bed.  I might even get around to putting in a timed mister.

Watch out for slugs munching on the mushies.  They come out of no where and can eat a crop down overnight.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe it'd be better to try to colinize the bulk substrate inside before taking it outside just incase the myc starts fruiting in small patches before fully colinizing the manure/coir... but if it will still colinize outside fine, that would obviously be the easiest way to do it.... do you think the pro-mix I was talking about would work well as a casing? It's mostly peat... also how thick do you think the casing should be? I'm guessing about 4-6 inches of substrate and maybe an inch of casing?

I don't know about the pro-mix.  If it is inert, then you should be fine.  I don't case my bulk when done indoors.  I have always had contams, green ick.  I just use large bark mulch for the stuff going outdoors, because of the humidity issues.  I live in St. Louis, MO.

As far as sub depth.  The thicker you are, the bricks are more firm and can handle being moved around.  I am currently evaluating if a thinner sub, 2", will give me more bricks, hence doubling my surface area base on making 2 bricks at 2" vs 1 brick at 4".

Hey, guys. I have 4 spore syringes here and not sure which to use on this first run. I have Burma, PF Redspore, Chitwan, and Penis Envy.... heard Chitwan and PE are kinda low yielders, so I'm learning towards Burma or PF Redspore.... what do you think?
