One man's model of consciousness.
    #10285522 -

What I'm going to attempt to describe here is the model I've come up with for what my mind is and how it relates to the universe at large. I've a rather analytically-oriented mind with a tendency towards the thinking trends of mathematics and science, which will probably be apparent in my model – just so you know where I'm coming from. I don't claim that this model is necessarily useful, because I currently cannot imagine an application for it, but I find it interesting and my hope is that you will too. I considered posting this in philosophy/spirituality but that section seems more focused on debate, not discussion, and my intent here is definitely discussion rather than debate. This is merely a way of thinking: as such I’m not sure it can be true or false, and therefore is probably not be a meaningful subject for debate. If that logic is in error, a mod may feel free to move this thread wherever it belongs.

Now, the model:

Something which I take as a given is that the universe can be represented as a many-dimensional array of information. This information has some structure, and we as beings must have access to some of this information and its structure or else we'd have no useful awareness of the world around us. But when I say "an array of information," please don't think I mean the universe is at its heart a cold and uninteresting set of numerals: 16, 12.5, 22, etcetera. Note also that I make no claim as to whether this structure is finite or infinite – that I couldn't tell you. All I mean to say is that ... well, basically that the universe has some inherent structure of information, which occupies many dimensions.

Our perception, our awareness, is multidimensional. Emotions, tactile sensations, each of these is its own dimension. I make no claim as to how to categorize these dimensions or how many there are in total. The reason I bring it up is to compare it to the rest of the world. Can we experience every aspect of the world? I don't think so. This implies that however many dimensions there are to our experience, there are more dimensions to the universe as a whole. Thus, my description of the universe as a many-dimensional array. Our awareness is multidimensional, the universe is many-dimensional.

We are aware of the universe, correct? We have access to some of its information. If that's the case ... what part of the structure do we have access to? If we’re aware of some things and not others … which things are they? The things we’re aware of are all within the total information set … so what’s their arrangement? The way I see it, our awareness is the set of points where our consciousness intersects the information of the universe.

A simplified example would be this: imagine all the universe is a three dimensional structure. Let's say it looks like a tree or some other fractal branching structure (personally I feel this describes the nature of real information, but for reasons I won't get into here because it has nothing to do with the fundamental nature of my model). What is our awareness, relative to this three dimensional information-shape? What does it look like? My answer: a membrane. A film, two-dimensional, twisted and folded, intersecting various branches within this tree-like structure. The points which lie both on our membrane and in the three dimensional information structure are the set of things we have awareness of.

That essentially is the model, except that I don’t feel the universe’s information is limited to a three-dimensional structure, and I believe our membrane likewise is not only two-dimensional … but really, the precise number of dimensions doesn’t matter. My model is thus: our awareness is a membrane, fluid in shape as our awareness of the world changes with time, intersecting bits and pieces of the greater-dimensional structure of the real world. In this model, learning and advancing one’s awareness is the process of conforming one’s thought-membrane to encompass more of the total structure of the universe’s information.

A fun idea, no?

Yeah nice idea, would the skin also be a physical example of the membrane you are talking about, or is it only metaphysical?

Nah this is purely a representational system. Our physical bodies are quite well understood without my rambling.
