Anyone here good with music theory?

So I've been trying to write songs lately with my guitar.  I don't really know that many chords so I'v been doing pretty basic chord progressions, however, once I have something set up, I never know what would work as a bridge or just something else to change up the song.  For anyone that is good with song writing....

1) Any tips on how to learn how to write stuff?
2) Heres an example of something I just made up, what could come next/before/in between?

Learn a few songs from artists you like, and you'll begin to notice some patterns.

If the song is in E maj, you'll play some A's, and B's.

The minor key that reflects E maj is D flat min, and you'll play some G flat minors and A flat minors.

So the same would apply if you raised the major key a half-step.

If the song were in F maj, you'll play some B flat's and some C's.

The minor key that reflects F maj is D min, and you'll play some G minors and some A minors.

You can modulate pretty easily to the V of whatever key you're in to change it up a bit.

For example, let's say you're in the key of AMajor.

A - I
b - ii
c - iii
D - IV
E - V
f - vi
gdim - vii (dim)

the E is your V chord.

What you can do is throw a V7/V in there (that is, the V chord of the original V chord) which in this case will be B7 because B is the V chord in E major. So after the B7, you go to E, and now E is your new tonic, or I chord.

Hope this helps, sorry if it doesn't make sense. You can ask me to clarify if it doesn't!

I f you are in A maj, the iii should be C# and the VI should be F#.

I bought one of those Complete Idiots Guide books for music theory. Not too far into it yet, and what I've read I already knew because I can read music, but it's fairly helpful. I think a book like that (simple theory) is a good place to start.

haha you're right... i never throw in the accidentals when I write that kind of thing out, because I always have a key signature staring me in the face! but you're right, those should have been included

For some 12 bar blues, play four beats on each note:

EEEE
AAEE
BAEE

and repeat.

In say, G:

GGGG
DDGG
EDGG

ahh man, I really need to learn what the notes on the fret board are. I never even know what key I'm in or any of that.

Is it easy to see what key you are in?  And then is there some website that would show me what the progression type thing you have would look like?

For the song i sent, i just realized my guitar is almost never correctly tuned, basically its a

E min
G maj
A Maj
C MAj
D

I'm in the same boat as you. I love playing and I'm trying to record some music (just got a new recorder) and I don't know anything about keys or most notes on the fret board are. I'm always improvising. prob need a good book :omgawesome: :jamming:

Your strings are EADGBE.

I will really help you to learn the bottom two strings, since those are going to be your bass root in whatever chord you play.

The bottom string is an open E that goes up:

E F F# G G# A A# B C C# D D# E

The next string is an A that goes up:

A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G# A

Learn these:

http://www.chordie.com/chords.php

Really focus on the majors and minors for now:

A, Am, B, Bm, C, Cm, etc.

Get comfortable switching back and forth from chords as they apply to each other, as I listed them in my first post

just start jammin out and when it sounds good, write that shit down.

i myself, have a little notepad of chord progressions and rythms. i also write poetry. when i write a new poem, i pick a progession that goes well with it, or just make up a new one, and its that easy.

Chords i-vii should be (in this order)

I major, II minor, III, minor IV major, V major, VI minor, VII diminished (This is for any major key, but I personally think that songs in minor keys sound cooler)

Ex. Shine on You Crazy Diamond is in Gm (G minor) and pretty much uses Gm, Cm, and Dm,

EDIT: And on the fret board, notice that there's pretty much a pattern for everything. Like, if you're in the key of G, and playing a G whatever chord, right under it is the C and a whole step over is the D (I, IV, and V).

I write down any good jams or ideas I have in my music notepad!!:jamming: now I got a recorder so that should help too when I want to record a song idea or jams!

7th chords are always awesome too for a jazzier sound, and I personally use them a lot on guitar. Also, sus chords are cool because they always want to go back to their original chord and such, but there are so many possibilities. For the key of E minor for example, since your song bit is in e minor, here are the 7th chords (key signature is F#):

E min 7
F# half diminished
G Maj 7
A min 7
B min7
C Maj 7
D dom 7

And I think it would sound good to go from the I to the V to possibly the VI and then VII. There you go!
