Where can I get a 2 1/4" hole drilled into a metal bin?

Okay so I'm planning to build a bulk pasteurizer like the one here-

However I'm going to use a metal bin, which will require a 2 1/4" hole drilling into it for the immersion heater. Most hole saws are for wood and plastic only, and ones for metal are very pricey for the saw and the arbor, plus there for flat surfaces only.

Can anyone think of businesses likely to be able to do it for me? Will a car garage be able to do it? Most of the sheet metal places i've looked up seem a bit to commercial like they only do large prototypes.

Any ideas? thanks

Use a small drill bit to drill lots of holes round the circumference of where the hole should be. then use something to cut through the metal thats left, a file will take away the burs.

or does it have to be a good fit?

It will need to be a good fit or it will leak or fall out the hole I think. I would attempt to do it myself, but I'm awful at cutting straight lines and i wouldnt feel confident at being able to produce a tight enough fit for the heater. I would pm the OP, however he's not been seen for a while

anywhere that works with metal should have welding gear and gas axes. garages and small fabricators would be your best chance.

Can you cut an accurate circle with a gas axe? Ive not done much work with metal or wood in the past, only electronics, so I dont know much about dealing with it

Draw the hole on the bin thin drill a hole big enough to fit a metal jigsaw blade into it and away ya go.  Follow your line with the jigsaw.

I don't have a jigsaw, plus as mentioned before i'm awful at cutting, line or no line. I was hoping somewhere would do it cheaper than it would cost me to buy extra tools. Its only a ten minute job so I was hoping it would be cheaper than the tools

Just borrow a dremel from someone with a cutting wheel or stone. Drill a pilot hole dremel away. Anyone can do it, seriously! Metal is easy to cut because you'll have a hard time melting instead of cutting (like plastic) and it moves slowly.

Draw the circle and work your way out. Low speed - low chance of error.

Otherwise just take it to a private fabrication shop (welders, exhaust places etc) and just ask them for the favor. Flash them $10 and they'll be happy to do it.

How thick is the metal you're drilling through?


*Note on what Bliz said above, slower does not mean slower speed setting on the dremel. You would want it to be on fast. If you are cutting steel thicker than 1/8", I'd forget the dremel.

As previously mentioned before, they are only for use on flat surfaces. For that cutter and an arbor for it in the UK it will cost 20-25 pounds. If say a mechanic/engineer with the tools charges 40 pounds an hour, and its only a half hour job, then it will cost the same and be done with the correct tools.

most hole saws will cut wood or metal.  hole saws can be used on radius material just as well as flat surfaces. i'm a carpenter, i do it all the time.

I do as well. That is half the reason of the centr part of the drill bit.

Edit: I wanted to add that if you have trouble getting the centre  of the bit to pierce metal, you can use a nail or a punch to get a small starter hole.

If you're going to use a hole saw, be sure to buy a couple or three extra pilot bits, especially if you're cutting into a non-flat surface. You will almost certainly break some with a hole that size in steel.

Start slow and gentle till you have a good groove going. Then gradually ramp up speed and pressure. If the saw is getting too hot get someone to drip oil into the cut while you drill. This will cool the blade and help it last longer. Once the blade gets red hot the temper is gone and it gets soft and loses its cutting edge. So cool it with oil to prevent this.

Standard bi-metal hole saws will cut metal just fine. I use them routinely to cut holes in stainless steel (stainless is hard though, and wears them out fast).

My hole saw brand of choice is Lenox. Top quality stuff.

Galvanized steel, Im unsure how thick it is, probably 1-3mm. Its just a normal rubbish bin/trash can

you should be able to do it yourself...

you could do what lineveda_sticks said.

or drill a hole then cut it out with a jig saw with a metal blade, a dremal tool with a cutting bit, a saw, a cutting torch, a welder with a cutting setting, and many other tools.


but a welding shop or garage or wrecking yard might be able to help you out.

The hole saw has a pilot bit, so the pilot hole is automatic. It needs the pilot bit to keep it centered till it gets cutting.

You don't need to "pour" oil, exactly. Just a steady stream of drops to keep the cutting teeth cool. Pretty often even that isn't necessary. The metal being cut can carry a lot of the heat away. If you see the saw teeth getting real hot (blackening or even glowing), get some oil in there before it's destroyed.
