How long have people been celebrating April 20h for?

Came up in conversation today, apparently, my father (42 years old) has never ever known about the term 4/20, or it's significance.  How long has the actual annual 'holiday' been occurring for?

i told my math teacher i wasnt going to be there on monday because it was 420 and he didnt understand. I had to explain to him and hes about 40 something.

There's actually a whole thing about this online. Apparently there is a group of people who claim to have invented it (albeit by accident) and they have all kinds of documentation to prove it.

I'll see if I can dig it up.

that's the story i heard. back when i was in high school, i got on one of my teacher's emails the week before 4/20 and one of the psychology teachers had sent out an email to all the teachers warning about 4/20. this was the explanation she gave too :shrug:

Those guys used to have a website up somewhere with a bunch of scanned copies of notes that they had written each other back in the day, and it seemed pretty legit.
