Re: orange mycelium condensation.. or contaminate [Re: Buckeye Oysters]
    #10162564 -

right i've dropped it so there is no chance of it going above 79f...

anyone got any ideas what it could be.. for sure? ^^ (pic at top) ???
- i think it's starting on my newest jars which are also B+...

which leads me to think B+ do in fact prefer cooler temps for incubation..  (the only explanation i could come up with???)

out of 24 pf jars....    all the B+ are going orange  and the EQ's
and the Koh Samui are doing fine..??

save ya scrollin:

any clues?

His temps are not the problem, you guys are so quick to blame incubation temps yet his temps have not even got to the upper limit. 75-80F is certainly not to hot.

I'm not quite sure what the discolouration is, i dont think its metobolites. TO be honest im not really sure ive not seen that colour before.

Anything over 77F is too hot, 75F is a safe upper limit.  The inside of jars are actually 5-10degrees hotter than the outside surrounding temp, meaning if temp is 80F the inside of the jar is easily 85F and begging for contams to pop.

That orange discoloration is definitely metabolite, no doubt especially with the high temp.

i had exactly the same thing with a few of my jars, strange orange that i've never seen before. my temps were about 70-75 f.

question what is an ideal temp for a small incubator with 8 quart jars in?

should I be aiming for about 70F

how much extra temp can the inside of the quart jar reach aproxx|?

for quart jars, room temp is fine (75F)

yeah low 70's would make perfect sense, surley theres at least 5+ extra heat in a quart jar!

It does seem like mycelium piss which are just metabolites. They will hurt nothing.

I can't remember but along time ago I read an article I remember it stating something to the effect that its actually a healthy sign ? Correct me if Im wrong please.

Ive been away from growing for well over a year now.

An excess of metabolites can point towards bacterial contamination, over-colonization of a substrate, or too high a temperature.

Elevated temperatures are a major cause of that. The high temperature stimulates bacteria, and then the mushroom mycelium must secrete antibiotic metabolites to deal with them. It's important to use room temperature for colonization, especially with larger substrates.
