orange mycellum skidmark??? please advice ;0)...
    #10156728 -

sorry ta post in the cultivation .. but there is no-one at all on the contamination forum....

there is alot of condensation in my jars and recently the mycellum has started going yellowish on just a couple of the jars (pics below)
and now they've gone orange..
i beg it's not lipstick or sumthing...

same jars different side:

p.s:  it seems to be in four patches per jar...  (looks kinda like when the mycellum was colonizing the brf at inoculation points...)

i haven't isolated them as i have high hopes it's just condensation coloring....

so what dya reckon it is?
thanks
B

Definitely looks like Lipstick mold to me. I had a couple cases of it, looks exactly like that. How does it smell?

it actually smells fine.. (slightly mushroomy like the rest of the jars?)
lipstick mold !stinks!  right?
what could it be...?

EDIT:  it also showed up after 2 and 1/2 weeks.... seems kinda late for a contam...  ('spose i could have missed it's slimy starting self.)

looks like myc piss to me...you should be ok. How long have they been inc'ing and at what temp? They are BRF cakes correct? They look ready to get dunked and rolled. Are the jars 100% colonized(not the top protective layer of verm) and if so how long ago did they look 100%?

lipstick smells like rotten apples, very much. If they smell like mushrooms then you should be fine. Good luck!

cool..

1.)  these pictured are not actually 100% yet..  two of my others
colonized 100% yesterday!!    so now i'm leaving them for a week.

2.) yep they're brf cakes..  my first time.

3.) my jars have been kinda staggered over two weeks.. (so some have been incubating for only one week and some for three.

4.)incubated at 77f - 80f            (was a little lower at first week)

i'm just waiting on my fc to arrive currently

cheers

everthing looks right....give em 3days to a week then if you notice it to have gotten worse or lose their aromatic fragrance when birthing then decide

One or 2 of my jars seemed to get this. I think it was because of dehydration, thats what I put it down to anyway.

It cleared up on mine so I think it might be ok.

Those temperatures are way too high for colonization - incubators are garbage, especially if you're just cutting your teeth on the hobby. Room temperature works far better.

Those spots look like metabolites, which probably resulted in the mycelium being stressed from your high incubation temperatures. Give the jars a good sniff when birthing - if you smell anything other than fresh mushrooms, chuck 'em.

oh....

well my room temperature  (U.K)  is pretty damn cold.

i've tried to keep them at 78f    as recommended by RR
Roadkill has also said he incubates at 82f    (i think)

and those are incubation temps.. (no need to factor in myc heat)

i don't think i've gone over 80f yet.

-> but i'm not trashing your idea btw..  i'm just pondering.
it'd be a shame to get this far and fk it up.

from what i read metabolites are usually in liquid form, its a defense to contamination released by the mycelium.....i'm not sure what you got, but i dont think its metabolites.

anyone?

^  yeh i read that too..  definatley doesn't look liquid like.

note..:

there are three species on the go..

B+, Ecuador  and  Koh Samui

all jars are pretty much text book except the three B+  which have
those orange marks..

the B+ were inoculated most recently.

Wtf??

That's right, keep your jars at 69-75F and you won't have that problem.  They should still be ok if you bring the temp down but you may have already started to much contam in the jar.  Just smell before fruiting.

His temps are not the problem, you guys are so quick to blame incubation temps yet his temps have not even got to the upper limit. 75-80F is certainly not to hot.

Im not quite sure what the discolouration is, i dont think its metobolites. TO be honest im not really sure ive not seen that colour before.

Hey, your using those tesco preserve jars!! My mate just got 2 and im going to be getting some more. :-)

Anything over 77F is too hot, 75F is a safe upper limit.  The inside of jars are actually 5-10degrees hotter than the outside surrounding temp, meaning if temp is 80F the inside of the jar is easily 85F and begging for contams to pop.

That orange discoloration is definitely metabolite, no doubt especially with the high temp.

I disagree.

and so will many others that incubate at 80-82F.

pf jars only produce a few degrees of heat during colinisation, larger grain and bulk substrates on the other hand will produce upto 10 degrees of heat.

Ive never had metobolites like that incubating at 78F

^ i thought that was fine too..  (temp)

so seems i'm left with wait till birthing and then smelling it??

to be honest if it's an unidentified something...  i don't really
want to smell it with the lid off, - if it could be some next
contamination..
Is it at all likely due to the water drops maybe? but it is strange
that only three were and they were all of the same strain - and done
at the same time
(he has three strains on the go)
?

I'm tellin ya, bring the temp down and that wont happen again.  Although PF jars don't make as much heat as grain jars/bags they still do indeed make heat, and in your case it is enough to stress the B+'s.  People who incubate at 80-82 are asking for problems.  I believe the TC's here would agree.
