now that i got your attention, i need a topic idea for a research
paper i have to write. It has to be about a current event (anywhere in teh world) and i have to identify a cross-cultural issue (its for a cultural studies type class) identify the two opposing sides, etc.
I just need a topic. I can't htink of anything good.
an example would be:
Isreal & Palestine
or any land issues with two (or more) opposing sides..

Or perhaps a study into this much rumored new relationship between Jenna Jameson and Britney Spears. This could include ethnographies on the economically delineated subcultures of pop music and the adult industry, and what these two groups may want from each other in terms of hip-cache, respectability, etc... I recently wrote a 4000 word paper on the evolution of the israeli - Palestinian conflict, if you have any questions, PM me. :smile:

One topic that is particularly applicable, given the above criteria, is a comparison between Israel's occupation of Palestine and the Apartheid of south africa.
You wouldn't beleive the parallels that exist!!

If you really felt like being radical you could draw comparisons between the State of Israel and the Nazis.

Perhaps you could do a cross-cultural survey of gender image subversion in the history of lesbian themes in art and literature from Sapho through Madonna.

Perhaps a you could perform a poststructural breakdown a la Foucault. Starting off by analyzing simile and metaphor as indexical signifiers denoting sexual power as representative of the classic dualistic extensions of polar extremes in the traditional penetration relationship. You could go on to demonstrate how this traditional symbolism supported the gender-based economic status quo of the society in question, and how subversion of this traditional symbolic relationship was met with harsh penalties depending on the time and culture.

But that would be getting into more lesbian porn? :wink:

I had to wrestle with poststructuralism when I was heavy into critical art theory as an art student. I'm sort of a Modernist at heart, but I had to know my enemies. Also it's hard to be a Modernist, in these troubled times of Postmoderism, without feeling like an anachronism or worse, a reactionary. It' something I'm still wrestling with, but just not as hard anymore. As that late existentialist philosopher Popeye the Sailor once said: "I am what I am, and that's all that I am." :grin:

One of my oldest and best childhood friends studied philosophy at UC Berkeley, and studied under John Searl, so I got to read the transcripts of that famous debate between John Serl and Jaques Derrida, and what I found was that Derrida was the ultimate anarchist prankster, who would simply retreat into the ether whenever he was cornered?

The only part of axiology of interest to me is ethics.  There seems to be a confusion about the term "Postmodern" since it can apply equally to erroneous ideas like the pair you mentioned OR something that has to do with Art.

Pretty soon we are going to be reviewing the ideas of Leibnitz and Democritus over the proper term for the major atomic particle.  As you are probably aware Democritus called them "atoms" while Leibnitz called them "monads".  Surely you won't want to miss this discussion.  I'm sure it will be a real knee-slapper. :wink:
