They always said that in health class but now I am wondering if it is just bullshit. What does it mean anyway? How do you measure maturity?

Well, if a high school health class statistic says it's so, I guess i can't argue with that.

In terms of psychological development, "maturity" usually means impulse control and/or higher reasoning ability. The frontal lobes develop more slowly in males, probably due to the influence of testosterone.
In terms of physical development, "maturity" might mean bladder and bowel control or the completion of puberty. Boys achieve these physical milestones later than girls.

Yes, my frontal lobes are amazing. Also, I've been raising boys since 1993, so I know of which I speak.

Assuming we're all adults here (since it's a requirement of the boards), the whole male/female maturity discussion is a totally moot point, since those lines converge in the early 20s.
So I'll leave my ridiculously sexist comments outside

I wouldn't be too sure about that. I'm certain that we've all known people that get past age 30 without much maturity to speak of. Guys and girls but honestly it's mostly guys.

Once a particular invididual has attained full physical brain development, it is up to them whether they actually use the structures which are in place.

Also, it's probably unfair to just say that a lot of men choose to be act immature. I'd say it's more apt to say that men are prone to take life choices to the extreme.

I think that poor impulse control & a lack of reasoning, while not unique to males, do tend to accompany what I call "testosterone poisoning."
Just think about the incidence of violent crimes, speeding, traffic accidents, etc...and compare the percentage which involve males vs. females. There's a reason why men pay more for auto insurance.
"Extreme life choices" would mean that there was some forethought, rather than simply acting on impulse without thought to the potential consequences.

Meanwhile 90% of race car drivers are men.
I know where you're going, and I mostly agree, but I think you're underestimating the choice that's involved in the "I don't give a fuck" lifestyle. I think at one point most of those types decide that that's how they want to act and that it would be fun, and that they're willing to accept whatever negative consequences come from it.
They're just never going to admit it because that's part of the act.

Could be. Tough to discern impulse control issues from "I don't give a fuck."

I didn't mean to be crass, I was just pointing our that no human runs on pure impulse, we aren't insects using taxis-based behaviors. That would be over-simplifying.
EDIT: stupid point, but I'll leave it up anyways as an example of my lack of impulse control
