Shitty, uneven fruiting. MASSIVE fruits.

I have some dung trays that were slow to pin, had many very small aborts, yet is producing some of the biggest and most beautiful shrooms I have ever seen. accept they are like one or two to a casing.
what factors could be causing that? is it the use of dung?

I'm curious too.
Did you take steps to ensure that the majority of the mycelium began to breach the surface of the casing simultaneously? Did any overlay form?

same thing happens to me, usually the first flush is many and latter flushes are massive fruits with less of them

Ok gonna take a hit at this.
Many pins aborting - caused by Excess Co2 / Insufficient fresh air or Humidity to high (reduce to 85-92%) or Excessive loss of moisture from casing layer (needs 70 - 75%)
A couple of big uns - well That would tie in with the excessive loss of moisture- i.e the big un's have sucked it all out. Does the casing look dry? Are you misting daily?

I think that maybe I didn't colonize the casing layer enough.
and I got some overlay.
Could that be it?

What ??? You get overlay from letting the casing layer over colonise.

Oh yeah sorry,
I meant the casing layer is really pulling away from the sides. But it is moist.
anyway, I think it might be air exchange. mmm.

even if it is moist if the casing layer is pulling away from the sides and you only have a few fruits, even if they are large ...... that sounds like to much moisture loss to me. But Im a newbie in my own right so take it with a grain ......

perhaps I should put a small dish of perlite in the chamber. adds a LITTLE humidity over ambient, but not TOO much.

Well the pulling away of the casing layer from the sides is a normal thing, it occurs when the nutrients are used by the mushrooms. Applying a layer of casing material will ensure the myceliul network stays moist and is not exposed to contamination. When dealing with larger bulk trays you need to ensure every layer of subsrate and casing is neatly packed and even. Also ensure that your spawn is evenly disspersed around the substrate material. And then lastly ensuring a well colonised casing layer is important. Also remembering that casing layers need to reflect the substrate depth and therefore need to possibly be thicker and a bit more compacted I find, useually a flattening of the casing layer with the back of your hand makes it good and firm. l

>accept they are like one or two to a casing.
OK, I can accept that.;) sounds like your substrate is too dry IMO with the most agressive shrooms sucking the vital essence from the punier ones, resulting in lots of aborts and a few giants. What's the strain btw?

No I don`t agree with that. I`ve reasently had a similar casing except there is no way mine was too dry, infact when I put the substrate into an outdoor patch it seemed too wet.

Say what?? That didn`t solve anything. It`s like I said, I solved this by making sure everything was even deep enough and nicely packed. and that the casing layer was evenly colonised, which resulted from having even layers.

I had the same thing happen to my Amazons. I got a crazy pinset, but only 4 grew, and they grew huge, the rest of the pins just stopped, the casing eventually got contaminated.
