I was diagnosed with ADHD and given meds and the only reason adderal works to make you concentrate is it geeks you out like coke so you can only think about one thing at a time. Kids need to be taught concentration and using the tv as a babysitter doesn't teach them anything. We are creating an army of idiots and don't even realize it. It is a scam by the pharmaceutical companies 100%

You wanna know what I think? I think parents and society has gotten so stressed and depressed from our empty materialistic happiness seeking ways. People get so caught up in their job, or own personal shit, that when it comes to their kids.....the last thing they want to do is mindfully and PATIENTLY teach them how to focus and adapt to certain tasts and projects. Its much easier to give a child a serious fucking stimulant, then to do some actual "Parenting".

I curse the mother fuckers.....who contradict themselves by preaching substance abuse prevention, and in turn gives a child 25mg of Adderall (like my little sister). You dont give a fucking child prescription grade meth, you just dont :sad: Its effects their mood, their growing brain, and health. Its fucking sad how skinny my sister is. Its horrible to watch. Combine our naturally slender genes with a heavy dose of stimulants for her body weight and your asking for a human skeleton. Everytime I go into a phychiatrists office with one of my family members, I drop a note in the suggestion box that says

"Stop giving Adderall (meth) to children".


I fucking hate our society, and its futile atttempts to control nature and the way our brains are set up to work. Its strayed away from helping people, to getting high paid kickbacks from pharmacutical companies. May those "Western Shamans" injest every fucking chemical they prescribe to patients, and suffer the withdraw symptoms that comes with them :gc:

To the TITLE:

I believe ADHD is as legit as any other psychological label. It's a cluster or traits or behaviors which can be used to define a person. People change, society changes, labels change. If you yourself view it as a problem, then seeking help is encouraged. If you don't, well, this conversation is moot. There may be an over-diagnosis of it, as it may be becoming the norm. Technology has been impacting where our focus lies for a while now, and as it becomes more and more ingrained in society, the effects will show. The labels will be slow to catch on.

Help comes in a variety of forms, for some pills are the way. Demonizing medicine is a common thing here, and I myself am opposed to medicine in general (for whoever asked about pain meds, yes, I do not take them, not even tylenol or asprin), yet despite this, I feel that medicine is a great option for certain individuals. It's a belief that I  hold, and that doesn't make it right. Others believe that medicine is a magic cure, and perhaps for them it is. Who the hell am I to say it's only a band-aid if it's working for them? Who am I to say they're taking the easy road? No one, I don't know their situation, only my own.

It depends on how you define "condition".

Estimates for the prevalence of ADHD range from 3-7%.  This (obviously) means that in a class of 25 you'll have from 1-2 kids with ADHD.  I'm not convinced that's an overdiagnosis although I'd be curious to see what elementary school teachers thought.

Thats ADHD.  It's abnormal behavior, not simply "kids being kids and energetic".  Its that kid that "is so damn energetic he ruins it for himself, and the rest of the class".

Wrong.

It doesn't 'geek' you out in turn making you able to focus on one thing. It has a complex way of working that involves many things. Being 'geeked' out is used for when you're speeding at recreational doses. A medicinal dose of Addy does not 'geek' you out.

I agree with you 100% except you're wrong about Adderall being pharm grade Meth. Adderall isn't Meth, it's a mix of 4 amphetamine salts. Desoxyn is pharm grade Methamphetamine.

Why is you're little sis scripted to adderall? Little girls already tend to not be big eaters and combine that with speed = not good.

Sure, I'd agree with that statement.

Of course then we come to the (slightly off-topic) question of "so then, what do we do about it?"

It would be great if we had endless resources to hire "special needs" teachers to help teach these kids.  But who is going to pay for that?

It would be great if we could simply beat the crap out of kids until they listened.  But that's not acceptable either.

How about "Parent licenses"?  So that only people who had "loving families" and could help kids succeed were able to have kids?  hmm....I don't think that would go over well.

We could kick the kid out of school so he doesn't impede the learning of others.  Of course without basic skills we may end up paying his welfare check later.

Of all the options, medication (which may be paid for by the individual's insurance plan) doesn't sound quite so bad.

While I may agree with some of what you said.... it simply swings to the opposite extreme (which never tends to work). The hippie's were onto something, but like all human behavior, they fucking dragged it to its opposite end. Their Free love, and drugs lifestyle damaged their cause, and became so distant from the others who needed to open their minds that neither was able to relate. Now we have guys who disregard all great info they may have, and we have people who are hell bent that psychedelics/new age scams = answer to everything.

Hell 20% of the philosophy forum is nothing more than new members to the psychedelic community who think they are some type of shaman answering his/her calling. Once again Siddhartha may have been onto something with this whole "Balancing" act of life :shrug::yinyang2:
