Korea launched the missile
    #10107462 -

Quote:

SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea has launched a long-range rocket, U.S. and South Korean officials confirmed to CNN on Sunday.
The payload of the rocket remains unclear. North Korea has said the rocket was to carry a satellite into space, but the United States, South Korea and other nations fear it could be a missile with a warhead attached.

A senior Obama administration official in Washington confirmed that the rocked did clear Japan.

The rocket -- launched at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday (10:30 p.m. ET Saturday) -- was a "provocative act in violation" of U.N. Security Council resolution on North Korea's weapons program, said Fred Lash, a State Department spokesman, told reporters.

An October 2006 resolution condemned North Korea for missile launches in the summer and a nuclear test that same month.

U.S. President Barack Obama reiterated that the United States strongly opposes any such launch.
We have made it very clear to the North Koreans that their missile launch is provocative, it puts enormous strains on the six-party talks and that they should stop the launch," Obama said while on a stop in France.
Obama warned that the United States will join with its allies to take "appropriate steps" to let North Korea know it can't violate United Nations rules and get away with it.

Earlier Sunday, before the launch, South Korea's national security council called an emergency meeting amid concerns that a North Korean rocket launch was imminent, a presidential spokesperson told CNN on Sunday.

Also, Japan's representative to the United Nations, Yukio Takasu, sent a letter requesting an urgent Security Council meeting in response to the launch. The letter to Claude Heller, Mexico's representative and the current security council president, was sent minutes after news of the launch broke.

Western nations fear that North Korea plans a ballistic missile test rather than a satellite launch, but the Obama administration's special envoy to the Six-Party Talks, Stephen Bosworth, said last week that it didn't matter if the North Koreans were trying to put a satellite in space or testing a ballistic missile that could threaten Japan or the United States.

"Whether it is a satellite launch or a missile launch, in our judgment makes no difference. It is a provocative act," Bosworth said.

Bosworth said the U.S. stands ready -- after a launch -- to participate in United Nations deliberations on new sanctions against North Korea.

Yea so Korea launched the missile that we specifically told them not to or we would take it as a direct threat.
The whole world told them not to do it.

What do you think is gonna happen?

It's almost impossible to tell what's going to happen, or even what should be done about it. Any idea what the U.N. sanctions stipulate if North Korea violates it's terms? Clearly, there has to be some counter-reaction to this or else it tells Kim Jong-il that he's free to violate U.N. Security Council resolutions.

But what does that mean? More economic sanctions? I doubt Kim Jong-il cares about that, and it probably just means even more starvation for the North Korean people.

Starting a war with North Korea (or continuing the war that was never technically ended) seems like a ridiculous notion, at least from the perspective of the United States. Economically & militarily, we're stretched way beyond our means.

Personally, I think Kim Jong-il is most likely just playing mind games and testing the waters to see what kind of a reaction he'll get. Actions like these often get rewarded because it gives him negotiating power amongst the other nations.

Kim Jong-il has managed to create a false persona of a paranoid & crazy dictator, therefore giving him leverage amongst other nations. The odd thing, of course, is that it's pretty clear that the persona isn't completely false. It's just that he knows how to feed off of it to his advantage.

I was thinking the same thing. Something has to be done, something WILL be done... but WHAT?
We (U.S.A.) are not in the position to engross ourselves in any more wars While we cant look like pussys and do nothing after they blatantly disrespected us...
We are in a odd situation here, maybe we'll sit back and let someone else take care of it for once.

IMO, I don't think North Korea personally disrespected us (the United States), as much as they're showing lack of respect for all the involved countries as a whole. I think it's much more a slap in the face to Japan & South Korea. We just happen to be in a mediating role, and we try to enforce measures against North Korea.

That being said... what options does that leave the United Nations or the United States? This one incident isn't worthy of a war by the U.N., or certainly not by the United States.

Personally, I think the U.N. needs to move away from economic sanctions, and move more towards very clear personal punishments on future major violations.

Problem is, as an outsider, I have no idea what I mean by that. In other words, I don't know how these things operate behind close doors, and I have no clue what kind of power the U.N. has at its disposal. There's just too many political considerations for any of us to know what should actually be done. Just my 2 cents though.

North Korea has many, many guns pointed at Seoul. Conventional artillery easily has that range, and they have enough to destroy most of the city. North Korea will not will listen to military threats because a) they're holding Seoul hostage, and b) they're batshit crazy.

The best the West can hope for is for the current dictatorship to collapse. I don't know how you go about doing that though.

Whatever action is taken, it isn't the US's job to deal with it (which would probably mean another war... )

Yeah we should have a council of powerful countries that can get together and make decisions about security matters like this. A "security council", if you will.

A good solution would be to stop giving the country's people aid. The North Korean government doesn't need to worry about maintaining a system by which its population will not starve, as the same countries that it threatens are the ones who are helping feed them. The government is their responsibility.
A more sensible thing would be for the United States to tactically strike all conceivable military targets in one fell swoop. I don't see why it would be so difficult.

That sounds like a great idea.

Lets just be sure to not give one country the authority to veto a measure approved by every other nation, and then give those veto powers to countrys on every conceivable side of every major conflict so that nothing ever gets accomplished.

Yeah the veto power is pretty lame. The council should make resolutions based on majority vote, not unanimous vote.

But that's not what's happening here. The security council is unanimous in its condemnation of NK's missile launch.

Condemnation is never a problem.

Getting them to do something is.

China and Russia are always "concerned" and whatnot when one of their pet evil countries does something stupid, but they don't support anything in response.

In any case, I think N. Korea is starting to be too crazy for even China's crazy ass.

Was reading that China was embarased/pissed with some of the more stupid shit the North has been up to, so maybe they won't obstruct, who knows.

N. Korea is really weird man.  You think that guy would try and be halfway reasonable.  What does he gain by being the nutty bastard he is?

In other news (edit), the official discusion board of North Korea apparently doesn't want me  as a member.  They never responded to my application.  : (

Not that I want to be supporting Kim Jong Il or anyone like him, but what gives you the right to tell N-Korea they can't fire a missile? In America's case it's like going to someone half down the block telling him to stop spraying his plants. No country really has the right to tell another country to do this or do that, but you CAN say, well, if you do it we will boycot you.

I'm sure zouden appreciates teh education.

And that's the body that banned ballistic missle tests by this country, which presumably is why people are saying they shouldn't have launched one.  All I've heard North Korea appologists say is it isn't a missle if you stick a satelite in it or something, which I really don't get.  I just don't see why they or anyone else would care what they put into the thing if they were going to ban missiles.

Of course, your rules don't apply. "Right" is irrelevant. There are only actions.
In this case, North Korea jeopardized the country of Japan by launching a missile through their airspace. There was definitely a risk that it could have struck Japan in some way. And for what? To lie about launching a satellite that plays "patriotic" music? To see how close they are to striking Hawaii? Oh glorious North Korea. I don't know what's worse - that the North Korean government does things like this or that no one has has actually done anything to rectify the sad state of affairs there, be it the people of the country themselves or anyone else on this planet.
