Kyoto Protocol: Yay or Nay.
    #10047409 -

Quote:
Is a global treaty like the Kyoto Protocol the path to reducing climate change?

This December, negotiators from all over the world, mainly from major emitting countries like China and Brazil, are meeting in Denmark to discuss how to effectively and sensibly solve the problem with greenhouse gas emissions. Though the United States has refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol, President Obama proclaims his commitment to the issue. But with other countries, such as Brazil, already changing their eco-hostile habits (Brazil recently pledged to cut deforestation by more than half), should the United States focus on creating a demand for a new global market of clean energy goods, services, and jobs?

Apparently, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's VP for environment, technology, and regulatory affairs, William L. Kovacs, sees differently. He feels that since the Kyoto Protocol does not reequire equal participation from all greenhouse gas-emitting countries, "a global treaty would put the United States at an unfair disadvantage economically." He also points out that "emerging nations such as China and India have said that they will not accept binding and enforceable greenhouse gas-reduction targets, citing the negative impact of such targets on their economies."

How does the common Shroomerite feel?

Discuss.

Nay until all countries, even third world countries such as China and India, are held to the same standard.

Agreed.  Why should we voluntarily shackle our economies?  Kyoto is socialism billed as environmentalism, and ineffectual environmentalism at that.  (if I remember it only stalls greenhouse percentage in the atmosphere for a couple years)

But as a global influence, do you think the United States should just stand at the sidelines as a bench player?

Not trying to debate. Just widen my view of understanding.

Nay until greenhouse gasses are proven to be "bad".

And.....
"Nay until all countries, even third world countries such as China and India, are held to the same standard."

What he said!

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

No, we should fervently oppose socialism in all its incantations - including environmentalism which very often is just veiled anti-capitalism.

QFT!

(I do support "real" environmental efforts... we shouldn't be pumping heavy metals into our water supply, etc, but BS like al Gorda's new environmental commodity market do nothing to help the environment and are nothing more than scams.)

Perhaps this is the right place to tell you guys that while I was in jail for seven months I read Michael Crichton's State of Fear and no longer believe in the theory that man made CO2 or Methane are causing the Earth to warm.

I like free markets and all. Truly I do, at least in general, but there needs to be some kind of oversight in recognition of sustainability. Life works the same way, on a bunch of sustainable systems. Why not honor what made us what we are and take some lessons? Nature FTW!

Yes.... excellent references in Crichton's "State of Fear". The story itself is pretty bleh but the subtext of the whole AGW hoax is very well done indeed. It provides tons of stuff to follow up on your own after finishing the book.

The idea of setting policy - particularly policy of such overwhelming economic significance - on the basis of completely unsubstantiated "science" would be hilarious if it wasn't so depressing.

Yes, I agree. Perhaps you remember me being defensive on this fiercely debated issue?
