Having trouble picking out a college.

My two main options are basically this, a small State college, or a huge out of State college.

I already have some credits from community college transferring (more would transfer to the state college).  The big difference is what is about 13k in price.  I could drop this down by taking fewer credits, and applying for residency so I could get in-state tuition for my second year.  Do you think it would be ok to possibly be almost 90k in debt for college?  I plan on going into something that will make a decent amount of money, but with this economy I'm not sure if I'd be able to recover financially ever.  I also will be receiving very little from the FAFSA.

I've missed out on opportunities before in my life and now I finally have an opportunity to do change something big, but I'm not sure if I can pull the trigger?

I'm in a similar boat. I myself am quite hesitant about picking a college because I don't want to run myself into debt. However many schools are so freaking expensive you often have to get yourself in dept.. Maybe ride out a smaller more affordable college for undergraduate studies and then go for a big one when you are ready to commit to a graduate program with a clearer direction in mind.

but the thing is i'm not just wanting to go to the school for the name (very respected), but also for the experience.  when students come into the town it is almost 100k people, and when they leave its about half the size.  its supposed to be a very fun experience. 


also, i am a sr in high school and for my junior year and this year i have taken duel enrollement at the local CC so i have a bunch of credits already, and know what i want to do

i'll be at about 70k once i finish my undergrad :puke:

if you're pretty serious about school though, i'd say it's definitely worth it. most of the bigger state universities have a larger budget/better reputation than the small state schools, so getting a job will probably be easier.

either is a good choice though. i'm so glad i'm in school right now. i can pick up some debt now and get an education while the job market is shit, and hopefully it will be turned around by the time i graduate in the next 3 years.

Volunteer. I haven't read any news on this recently but Obama promised financial assistance to student's with loans who volunteer.

Personally, I'd say go with the cheaper of the schools anyways. I was at a tiny little private school that cost around 30K a year. I finally wised up and realized that the 5K a year state school with a national reputation is much better than a school no one outside of my state has ever heard of. College is pretty much a rip off no matter where you go so the important thing is to decided how much you're going to let them screw you. Best of luck

Yes, im absolutely in love with the campus of  the large out of state school, but i do not mind the smaller school one bit, it is up north so it has these skyways so you never have to walk outside to your classes, which means very good looking girls in skirts flip flops and short sleeved shirts all winter. :vaped:

I'd go with the bigger one then, forget the expense go where you know you will have an awesome time.

For a bachelors?  Absolutely not, thats completely ridiculous.  I graduated with 25k, and that was with not working for a whole year (that is, most of that isnt school related).  How could you possibly rack up 90k in debt for a bachelors?  It doesnt make sense...

had I not transfered to a state school, when I got my bachelors I would have been out  somewhere around 120

thus me transferring

Well, I got my B.S. from a world class research university for 5k a year instate (about 15k a year if your out of state).  Paying money like that is crazy, thats for rich people who can afford to drop tons of money just for a name.

If you get accepted into Penn State's Main campus GO! But it's the most expensive out of state school in the country I think.  Its like 9k a year for me in state and I get a lot of fafsa $.

I think out of state is around 30k which is ridiculous.

also, I plan on going to law school after my B.S. so I'll be up there with a good bit of debt in the end but I think well worth the time and money.

Yea, Im visiting there this weekend.  Flying in on Thur and leaving on Sun.  Tuition isnt a consideration for me, because the dept. is paying my tuition for me (plus $25k a year for being a TA :grin:)

I hope something there grabs me or turns me off so I dont have a hard decision to choose between schools.  Like the OP, I have a big choice to make between 5 different programs.  I cant wait till its over.  :frown:

Yea, some law and medicine graduate degrees can be quite expensive.  Thats one reason why lawyers and doctors are some damn expensive!  Thats the norm there though... not like a bachelors where it can be quite affordable.

Yea, I hate the fact that for law school you can get any B.S. major and still get into law school.  Im a kinesiology health fitness major because if shit falls through and I cant go to law school I'll be able to be a gym teacher/ gym instructor/ work for resorts or corporations.  Or get a completely unrelated career where the peice of paper gets me in the door. lol.

I got my BA at a state college but never had any interest in a desk job. Right now I'm a nursing student at a community college, and I have noticed that a lot of students already have a degree.

Don't count on just your 4-year degree to land you a good paying job. It depends on your major and skill. At the community college, a lot of post-grad students are turning to technician programs to at least guarantee them a livable income. There are a lot of skilled and educated people fighting over jobs right now. It is at the point where employers can take overqualified employees for low level admin jobs.

I love education. But I don't know if it is worth a lifetime of debt. If you plan on spending a load to make your degree look a little more attractive, make sure you take advantage of networking and placement opportunities.

Well I have connects who are lawyers so internships for that would be a breeze.  For the fitness instructor business notttt so much.
