I guess it's better to run around being paranoid and believing
some guy with no history of instability will simply snap and go
on a killing spree, seem that those that believe they have
extremely high stress jobs where they get no recognition, no
respect and are generally shat upon by the public are more
likely to have that happen... maybe you should reconsider whom

About that comment, are you adding in terrorist acts such as those of the IRA and middle eastern groups, or are you talking gun crimes in general?  If you're going to include explosives, of course mass murders will be far less via gun than explosive device.  It only takes one explosion to take down a building.
Now if you did the statistics of mass gun murderers, (a shooting in the street that's gang or theft related isn't mass murder), then you're going to find assault rifles and shotguns as your primary weapon.
