Lack of motivation...
    #9961949 -

Seriously, I have bad problems getting motivated to anything! Whether it is homework, getting up in the morning, shroom hunts, anything. And i get distracted so easy, damn phone, guitar, MSN and PC.

Anyone got any tips on how to improve my motivation, and I always feel tired no matter if I have had 7 hours sleep or 10.

What are the best supplements to take if any?

Nah, I dont wanna be hyper. Plus I'm not really interested in meth, coke etc. Just regularly motivated  I find it hard! I am not really depressed about anything, just lazy.

I really enjoy going out with my mates, but I can't do that everyday

I really need to take up a new sport, or at least do some coaching/umpiring. I think I might do some soccer umpiring, as I have completed my level 1.

I have a theory that it is the lack of physical exercise, as at the moment I am totally consumed by work, school and my parents (divorce, etc).

Often people frame things like homework, getting up in the morning, etc as chores. Is it any wonder then that people don't inherently want to do them?

It's all in how you frame things. You don't seem to have any difficulty in being motivated to use your phone, play your guitar or do things on your PC. Why is that? Why don't you just look at your homework in the same way as your guitar and act like you feel the same way about your homework as you do your guitar?

I personally have found that reading books, listening to tapes, doing exercises, taking stimulants, making sure I'm rested, etc, in order to help me get motivated to do things in fact only really serves as a distraction that just perpetuates the avoiding of what I "should" have been doing instead. So, instead of that stuff, having become fully aware of the futility of making the condition of "having to first get myself motivated" in order to do my work, I instead have become aware of my patterns of avoidance and if I start to agonise over doing something, I go, "wait a minute!", and I interrupt that pattern by going, "fuck it, everything else can wait for a while, I'll start my work now", and I start it immediately.

It's like a balance of approaching it and avoiding activities. As I'm beginning to start my work and while I am doing my work, a part of me stays conscious of my patterns that try and stop me from continuing and my patterns that encourage me to keep going. Like I say, it's a balance between those motivational forces. So when I notice I'm beginning to run my avoidance pattern, I replace it with my pursuing patterns. I find rehearsing my desired behaviour in my mind a few times also helps (this can take just seconds to run through in your mind the desired behaviour with a good attitude a few times over).

For example, I wanted to get up at 4:45 this morning to work on a research presentation before a meeting I had at 9:30. I expected that I might be feeling pretty groggy and not feeling like getting up so early in the morning.. So as I was going to sleep last night I vividly imagined being woken up by my alarm in the morning and automatically swinging my legs out of bed, sitting up and turning off my alarm, kissing my girlfriend and appologising for waking her then walking out of the room. I rehearsed this in my mind about 3 or 4 times, including the sensations of movement, and with a positive sounding internal dialogue. Well this morning came and my alarm went off and I found myself automatically doing almost exactly what I had rehearsed the night before. It made getting up much easier. ...but I'm soo tired now, I think I'll go have a little nana nap.

Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do, and play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do.

We used to do this thing back in Papua New Guinea when we went down the rivers in big like tires, was mad fun.
