unmanned air exchange ?
    #992507 -

Hello all ,

A friend of mine might need to leave her/his terrarium alone for up to a week to go visit relatives. The terrarium is made out of a glass 10 gal aquarium . It has a heating pad , some towels in bottom to absorb heat , and is locked right at 79-82 degrees F ( currently incubating in jars) . Everything is going good so far , but what can this friend do to fan her/his terrarium while he/she travels ? Place an aquarium pump in bottom of terrarium on metal rack above perlite ? Can this pump be run 24/7 ? Are air filters required on the input hose to filter contams ? Will said person be screwed if veils break while traveling ?

well, I certinly wouldn't leave that heating pad on while no one was watching it for a week.

if you are still incubating, no real need to fan. but if you plan to be fruiting:

my friends auto setup is an aquarium air pump with a hose going into an air stone in a jar of water in the fruiting chamber. my friend's fruiting chamber allows air to escape out of the bottom making it easier to get rid of co2. but i guess some air exchange is better than no air exchange, so if i were you i would do the same thing. you might get away with it running 24/7 but i would try it first for a few days before you leave. chances are your water will get used up leaving dry air running 24/7 which could be bad. my friend uses a timer set for 15 minutes on 15 minutes off 24/7 and does well. if you run the hose into water you may not need to filter the air at all. but if you decide to filter you can filter the air intake on the pump using a tek i saw somewhere on these forums not too long ago. no problem if the veils break but you will end up with spores on the cakes and other shrooms plus some people don't like the taste of spored shrooms.

I have had this same scenario. I personally decided to stop innoculating, finish fruiting, then innoculate a ton of stuff before i leave for 10 days, leave it on auto-incubation, then when i get back have a fruiting festival

that's a good idea: don't fruit. even if they are fully colonized another week won't hurt.

Or you could store the jars in zip locks in the fridge until you get back.

I have a question for you, how does your friend let air escape out of the bottom without air getting back in? What kind of filters are in place to protect against containanation?

Unless you are looking at pins you have got time. Once you have pins growing then it's gonna be about 5 day till harvest. Filters are not required. Try to keep the input air clean, but even a HEPA filter misses a few contams. I've seen mushrooms grow in all types of conditions. That sayed, if you birth your cakes and then split for a week the worst that could happen is you get back and still have no pins..LOL.

If you know you have to leave, delay birthing until you return if possible.
