Would have to agree with you.  (Note I did say my criticisms were the methodology described by the article several times).



Of note is that the title of the article and this thread is not a conclusion made anywhere in the study. 


The only thing that stuck out at me from reading the paper is they didn't say how they corrected for broadband prevalance.  As I said before, why would we presume porn subscriptions would be linearly related to broadband access?

Additionally did the paper use the new subscription rate to determine broadband access?  Is this a good measure?  Wouldn't new internet users or new broadband users be more likely to be poorly educated on torrenting, usenetting, and using other rapidshare, emule, et cet sources?


Even assuming their metric accuratly reflect broadband aailability, wouldn't it be logical to presume those with less availability would have higher rates of people with  newly available broadband or internet?  And wouldn't these new users be percisly the people more likely to not know how to find free porn through p2p or rapidshare/usenet?  So if the correction was only linear then they would make rural areas with new access areas artifically inflated on the porn consumption.  If ruralness is associated with conservatism then this would cause a correlation between the two.

What do you think zouden?  That's really the problem I see- they don't seem to explain, at least in my skim, how they correct for availability and how they know that its an appropriate method.

Other than that I agree the study is fine.  While it may not mean much, that's fine.  The problem is the abuse of stats papers and the public inevitably makes for hype or to confirm their biases.

You were such a yummy target I just couldn't resist. As for it being against the rules that must be some kind of hidden rule because the rules page pretty much only says no flaming.

Its been said before by the mods that baiting isn't allowed, and it certainly is banned under the site rules even if it isn't listed in this particular forum's additional rules.

Either way I think that's pretty shitty you would just continue saying things you carecterize as logical fallacies just to get a rise out of me.

Hmm, I see what you're saying - he didn't compensate for free porn (p2p or whatever). Since his data is based on paid subscriptions, it might under-report the porn consumption in areas where computer literacy is higher (if we're presuming that people who are more computer literate are more likely to find free porn).

However, it doesn't appear that this bias is very strong:

The article specifically says that porn consumption (per person) is higher in urban areas. If anything, that would lead to higher rates in blue states.
