Which mushrooms can grow neer or under 60 F?

Can mushrooms be colonized and fruited at or around 60F?  Would it be possible to do agar isolates and find a strain that can thrive in lower temperatures?

They will just be slow with cubensis, but will work.

Some have even said the colder side sometimes ends up with better fruit in the end.

If you're growing at 60 just be extra careful about sterility. Slower colonization time = more time for opportunistic molds to take hold of substrate.

60F should be fine for colonization and fruiting.

Right now I'm fruiting at 66F. It seems to be working just fine. I looked at many posts and found that you can fruit at this temp, but it will be a little slow. If the temp was 70 - 74, the mushrooms would grow a little faster.

P. Cubensis will fruit fine at 60-65 degress... Even if temps drop lower at night. 

I would build an incubator for the cold season for the colonization... if you're like me and don't put your heat up past 65 degrees... you'll find that at 60-65 degrees colonization will either stall, or be quite slow.
You want your colonization temp a bit higher, 70-80 degrees.

So you basiclly dont need to heat your incubator or fruting chamber. can you just let tham do there thing at normals rooms temp (as far as colonizing and fruiting) ?

You don't need to heat your fruiting chamber at all.

The only time I would recommend using a heated incubator, is if your house is colder than 68 degrees... like mine is.  And I live in the northeast that has a pretty long cold season so I use an incubator.
Higher heat is used only during colonization. 70-80 degrees.

A quick guide to making a good cheap incubator:

Buy a 20-50watt submergable aquarium heater.  Buy two non-transparent totes at least 70 quarts.  Fill a few gallons into the bottom tote, put aquarium heater in the water, turn it on... this heats the water, use canning jars or some way to keep the second tote off the bottom of the below tote... place dry tote in the bottom tote... this is your actual incubator.  the bottom tote full of water heats the top tote, and bam, cheap effective incubator..

yea i understand that, but as far as the whole colonization process, can i just say put my jars in my container with maybee some type of insulation in it, with out a heater? or should i place a heater of some sort in the incubator at some time.

Yes.  Hundreds of species thrive at the fruiting stage with those temperatures, although nearly all species prefer a colonization temperature of 70F to 75F.  It would help if you stated what species you have in mind, rather than say 'mushrooms'.  That's like asking if a blue car can go 60 mph.

yeah, I've heard of folks using just insulation with no heater... as long as it's 70-80 degrees.

I cultivate quite a few species at room temp (62-70 winter) (72-78 summer) and I do notice a slow down in colonization, but I'd rather have it be a little slow than be posting one of the horror stories about how every jar in my tub contams.

Chances are if every jar in an incubator contaminates, it would have contaminated outside of the incubator too.... that kind of mass contamination usually indicates dirty syringes, improper/unsterile inoculation/cross contamination/g2g or the likes.

Negative. People forget that you need GE and get cobweb in jars, or they keep it nice and warm while the water evaporates a little, making a humid environment. This ends in bacteria thriving and infesting jars.

In my experience, the best way is to leave them out on a shelf, or in a large cabinet.

Sometimes that's true, but often it indicates jars colonizing in a closed space.  Even on an open shelf, if I get trich in one jar and don't notice it right away, the jars immediately around it often get infected a few days later.  No jar filter is perfect, and if you have a massive spore release, it easily overwhelms even the best filter material.  That's why I recommend colonizing out in the open.

In addition, stale air in a box leads to anaerobic conditions, which promote bacteria.  Furthermore, mushroom mycelium has circadian rhythms, thus having them on an open shelf exposes the mycelium to a day-night schedule of light and temperature fluctuations which helps establish the pattern for later, resulting in a better fruiting performance when the time comes.

circadian rhythms?  Does that actually play a significant role in the mycelium's fruiting stage?

I colonize in the open during the warm seasons, and in absolute darkness in the winter, and I haven't noticed any difference in fruiting performances.  This is interesting, I'll have to read more about this because I haven't heard of it before.
