Poly tubing loading machine for straw/paper/etc. logs

I have been planning on building a machine that can help in the assembly of straw and paper logs by mixing bulk sub, spawn, and supplements together in a 8cu ft cement mixer, dumping into a hopper with a auger that feeds mix through a 10" PVC tube outside the hopper.  11.5" (18" width) tubing is pulled over the end of the tube and bunched back as much as it will go.  A rheostat with footswitch controls the speed of loading with the DC lathe motor and post hole digger auger bit.  The end of the poly tubing is cable tied and couple vent holes made for escaping air.  As mix comes through tube one holds onto the poly tubing so the mix is pushed tight into the tube.  With proper hand pressure maintained the poly tubing is filled much like sausage is made.  When desired length is reached the tubing is cut, end packed with fist, cable tied, and + holes punched.

I'm hoping to be able to make something as efficient as fungi perfecti advertises, but only for logs instead of tubes (maybe they make ones for poly tubing I dont know).

I'm buying the cement mixer on monday for $250, it is electric 800w:

That sounds awesome! You are going to pasteurize the mix before you put it into the loading machine right? Are you going to mix the spawn with the sub directly in the cement mixer?

I recently got two dozen glass petri dishes, a 4-plate magnetic stirrer and an eberbach container off of ebay, so I am ready to do some strain isolation and heavy duty LC.

Would it be more efficient to poke the holes while the poly tubing is still flat?  I'd try rolling some out and poking holes(you only have to poke half as many w/tubing flat) then tie it off and see if it fills properly with the pre-poked holes.  I would do just 3'-4' to start so if for some reason it doesn't fill properly, it is only 3'-4'.  I don't use the poly tubing so this is just a thought, take it or leave it.

If you pre poke holes the plastic will tear from the force of loading.

I thought about that, but would try it with a short section anyway, because I am curious.  It just seems to me that most of the forces would be focused on the bottom of the tube(parallel to the auger) and not so much outward(perpendicular to the auger).  I'm sure there are forces pushing outward, but are they enough to rip the plastic?  At least this inquiry mind would like to know.

Granted this little time saving measure, if it works, may not mean much to a small scale grower but if you are going to build a contraption to load bags it would seem you are planning on doing things on a pretty large scale.  On a large scale little things add up in a big way.  Just ask UPS why their drivers don't make left turns.

Holes can be done pretty easy and fast if you take a piece of metal and screw about 3x4 (12 total) arrowheads to it and pop all of them through the plastic at once.  It takes like only 6 smacks with it and your done.

I was looking at that mixer too.  I need to build a rock fireplace and block wall this summer, so will be mixing a lot of mortar.  I hate mixing in a wheelbarrow.
