Few Questions From A New Grower

I have recently acquired 4 San Pedro cuttings that are roughly 12 inches..

I am gathering supplies for when they arrive in the mail.. I just had a few questions..

I plan one putting them in clay pots probably 8 or 10 inch pots, is that big enough ?  Also I plan on doing a 50/50 perlite to soil mixture covered with either sand or fish tank stones..

My question is, due to my location I can not get cactus soil, so will it be ok if I get just a plan organic potting soil ?  Also Is the perlite and soil good enough or should I add sand or something to it ?

this is going to spark much debate, everyone uses a different soil mixture.
and it often reflects the climate the plant is been grown in also.

what you propose is fine i guess.

personally i would just get some standard commercial compost and mix a good amount of coarse sand and gravel in. something like 2/3 compost, 1/3 sand and grit.

wetter climates = more sand and grit.
hot dry climates = less sand and grit.

Thx for some insight, I live in the great Lakes region, so it is fairly wet during the spring and early summer..

I will I just worked a deal last night with the person and they are shipping them today, so I should get them around Monday or Tuesday.. And I will take pictures for everyone, also to see if you guys think they are healed over enough..  He told me he cut them like a month ago, and they should be ready to start rooting..

If it's the guy from the marketplace, I'm also getting a few cuttings from him, still have to confirm some stuff, but I should buy them soon :grin:. I'm starting to have too many cacti here.

The cactus soil I have run into is just regular soil with a bit more perlite and a bit less large pieces in it.

I would recommend more than just sand and soil. I would add in perlite and/or fine gravel as well.

I use a 1-1-1 of soil-perlite-coarse sand for all of my cacti.

Here is a ratio that was sent to me with my pedros. They showed up emerald green and extremely healthy so I assume this guy knows what he's doing:

40% = Real compost
10% = good grade garden soil
50% = perlite

From the same grower I was told to mix in humus, which is the mostly broken down organic material found on the ground under the uncomposted material in the woods. Chicken poop fertilizer is good to mix in as well. The ferts might be best to wait on until roots are formed and your cacti are metabolizing again.

not sure what kind of sand you will find there but you want coarse sand (building sand) not the really fine stuff.
fine sand holds water so it will achieve the opposite of what you want, good drainage.

so yeah if you have wet summers, adding 50% of either perlite grit or sand or a combination of all of them would be good :yesnod:

For sure. In my early gardening days I made this mistake. Fine sand will simply turn to a mucky concrete-like mess and will do more harm than good.

Pachanois actually love water much more than other cacti, and if your summers are fairly wet you should get some nice, rapid growth so long as they dont remain water-logged. :yesnod:

I would just go with Schultz or Miracle Grow cacti soil for trichos. Hell, even my lophs like it. Not the safest choice for them though. I think there is a certain amount of paranoia when you just got a few cacti. Don't stress.

Personally I think that premixed soil gets a bad wrap. Yes, for several applications it is better to mix your own. Stay away from the stuff with chemical fert already added, unless its cacti IME.

Thx for the advice the only problem is I have checked every home depot, lowes and big stores like walmart in my area and they don't have any cactus soil..

i use miracle grow cacti soil as well, works great and drains fast

ive used it with a number of different ethnos and notice it works good for them too:grin:

Yeah its really a bad time of year for soil. Thats very very true. I bought the last 12 bags of MG cacti soil and 20 bags of MG organic soil (for my MJ :wink:). You gotta get that when you can. Right now this is the time to stock up on Jiffy Cubes. They are great for germing damn near anything but cacti.

If you wanted to, you could just put them in some good potting soil for now. I probably wouldn't because I hate doing a job twice. It would be safe until they roll out the pallet of cacti soil. As mentioned above, you can NEVER go wrong by soil recipies from seasoned growers.

Everyone should remember that while cacti that are native to areas such as Peru (Trichocereus *help me out here FH lol*) can do well in various soils, while cacti that come from Mexico (i.e. Lophophora, Ariocarpus, Aztekium, Epithelantha) are best served in very gritty soil. That doesn't mean that one won't work for the other, but we must consider its natural habitat and the risk of rot.

Sure, you could get it that way, but shipping dirt ain't cheap. I'd just mix my own in you situation. Make up about 50lbs. You should be able to find all the things required through the previously mentioned stores.

At the most a little over 1 bag of MG. I think the Schultz bags are smaller, or maybe they just pack tighter. Still its good stuff. It shouldn't be over $5 a bag, so get $20 worth. That way you won't have to worry about it for a bit.
