Obama’s Transportation Secretary Eyes Mileage Tax on American Motorists
    #9832158 -

Washington (AP) - Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says he wants to consider taxing motorists based on how many miles they drive rather than how much gasoline they burn -- an idea that has angered drivers in some states where it has been proposed.

Most transportation experts see a vehicle miles traveled tax as a long-term solution, but Congress is being urged to move in that direction now by funding pilot projects.

A tentative plan in Massachusetts to use GPS chips in vehicles to charge motorists by the mile has drawn complaints from drivers who say it's an Orwellian intrusion by government into the lives of citizens. Other motorists say it eliminates an incentive to drive more fuel-efficient cars since gas guzzlers will be taxed at the same rate as fuel sippers.

The system would require all cars and trucks be equipped with global satellite positioning technology, a transponder, a clock and other equipment to record how many miles a vehicle was driven, whether it was driven on highways or secondary roads, and even whether it was driven during peak traffic periods or off-peak hours.

The device would tally how much tax motorists owed depending upon their road use. Motorists would pay the amount owed when it was downloaded, probably at gas stations at first, but an alternative eventually would be needed.

Privacy concerns are based more on perception than any actual risk, Atkinson said. The satellite information would be beamed one way to the car and driving information would be contained within the device on the car, with the amount of the tax due the only information that's downloaded, he said.

I think it's dumb.  Smaller cars that use less gas cause less damage to the roads, thus road maintenance is lower.  The gas tax is fine.  I certainly don't want a GPS chip so the government can track not only my miles, but WHERE I go, which is my business, not theirs.

I wouldn't like the idea either.

However as a matter of clarification. The only reason they would want this tax over the fuel tax is to institute a structured tax bracket. This way excessive drivers would get taxed more and short distance drivers would get taxed less.

I share RR's distain for the plan on the basis of the size of car and additionally the fact that the whole idea is just plain too fucking complicated.

... where you are at all times.  Socialism leads to facism.  Viva Obama!

The really cool thing about this is that it does away with any motivation to buy a fuel efficient car.  You are taxed on distance traveled, not petrol burned.

(Actually, I can't imagine that this will go anywhere...)

Edit:

Just saw the post above... heh.

People who drive more are already taxed more at the pump, due to the amount they purchase.

I dont believe it.

Ohbummer would not force every single driver out there to put GPS on their car for a new tax.

I suspect it's more of the same propaganda about how he's a socialist, and socialists believe in 'big government' and how the republicans aren't part of the 'looney left', 'champaign socialist' democrat crowd,  they are the party of freedom for the little guy, and the little guy should of voted for them.

I personally am unsure as to if they "should" but I do think this bill is stupid for reasons that were pretty quickly outlined in this thread.

Damn, I would have loved to have told you "I told you so" after I posted, when this thread had zero replies, that the transportation secretary only mentioned wanting to explore the idea and that Obama would be sure to reject the idea, but I didn't feel like logging in to post it at the time.

But yeah, told you so in my mind. :smirk:

Calm down take a deep breath....Nobody is spreading propaganda...

"Obama's Transportation Secretary says he wants to consider  taxing motorists based on how many miles they drive rather than how much gasoline they burn"

UPDATE:

Thank you Gastronomicus,

"The Obama administration will not support a policy of taxing drivers based on their mileage, the Transportation Department said Friday after a published interview in which Secretary Ray LaHood called it an idea "we should look at."

Why do you even mention my name in this thread?  I had nothing to say about it.  And that "forced volunteer service" was a well thought out addition to Obama's campaign website statement of policy, not some flip remark by a Secretary of Stupid Ideas.

Assuming Jesus were real, Obama is much closer to correct heritage than the white Christian version.  However, this really has nothing to do with the topic of the post.

Getting back on topic...

The original proposal was really unworkable from a technical standpoint.  They might be able to force new cars into the system by mucking with the cars computer, but older cars would be almost impossible to verify compliance.  If people can mod the favorite video game console to play pirate software, or hack their favorite phone to run custom apps, I am pretty sure people would be modding their car computers to falsely report distance traveled.

This idea has been around for years - long before Obama took office. Various states have discussed a mileage tax too.

I agree with RR. The existing fuel tax just seems like a much more elegant solution.
