First Timer Need Feedback!
    #9807869 -

Ok I know you guys probably get a lot of these posts but I am a first time shroomer. I’ve done about a month of research on this site (which is great by the way full of great info) and have developed my own little technique which I plan to share with you and hopefully get some feedback from the more experienced on how you think it will work.

First I ordered a 12cc Spore syringe of Pink Buffalo and two pre-sterilized mycojars. I ordered the pre-sterilized jars because I cannot utilize a pressure cooker at the time being. So I plan to skip the sterilization process of the substrate. I have ordered them a few days ago and should be getting the soon.

While I waited the other day I build my incubation chamber (By the way all this is being done in a room that is kept about 65 degrees F). I went with the technique where you use a Styrofoam box with a 100w fish tank heater (Which I plan to keep all the way up) and a glass of water (I plan to add hydrogen peroxide to the water to keep it sterile). The Box is 2 ft. long, 1 ft. wide and 9 inches tall. The width of the Styrofoam is ¾ of and inch thick. It also contains a thermometer and hydrometer. I tested it and it keeps about 82 degrees F and about 80% humidity.

When I get my syringe I plan to inoculate in a small bathroom with my glove box i made. I will spray the room down with disinfectant spray and clean the surface I am using with bleach. I will take a black trash bag, lighter, the syringe, and the jars into the bathroom and spray more disinfectant spray. Then I will wipe the rubber gloves and the top of the jar down with alcohol. Next I will uncap the syringe and flame the needle, then inoculate 4 points on each jar on the side. I will flame the needle between jars to prevent cross contamination. After that I will put the jars in a sterile black trash bag and seal it (I don’t know if I should do that, don’t know if it will need air exchange and was wondering if I should everyday while incubating take the lid off and fan inside and also wipe the water down?) and then take the bag and place it in the pre- humidified sterile incubation box. Then seal the lid and let colonize for about 4 to 5 weeks. I know if I see green mold during this process to totally throw the jar away.

After fully colonizing I plan to let sit for another week before dunking and rolling. I was wondering if you guys recommend doing this your first time? But from what I have learned the mycelium is resistant to infection after being fully colonizing. I will also know the substrate out of the jars I will not fruit them out of the jars. After dunking and rolling I plan to place them in my fruiting chamber/ Terrarium. But I am getting ahead of myself.

While they are Incubating I plan to build my Terrarium. I decided to go with the rubber maid chamber with pearlite. I plan to buy a chamber about the size of my incubation chamber. The chamber will have a clear bottom and sides and a dark lid. I Plan to drill ½ inch holes for air exchange and cut out a square on the lid and tape on plexeglass. It will also contain a thermometer and hydrometer. I will put in about an inch of pearlite that is soaked with distilled water treated with peroxide and then place in the chamber loosely. After dunking and rolling to increase the fruiting potential. When rolling I plan to place the dry vermiculite in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 30 min to kill any mold spores. Then letting it cool then rolling the cakes in it. I will let the cakes sit for a hour after dunking for 24 hours. Next I will place he cakes in the pre-humidified terrarium. The cakes will be placed on aluminum foil. Then I will spray down the cakes and the side of the terrarium. Then I will seal it. I also was wondering if I could use the fish tank heater/water in the terrarium to keep humidity for the fruiting process. Is that a possible technique instead of the pearlite? But I plan to go with the pearlite because it sounds like that’s what most people use.

While Fruiting I plan to keep the terrarium in a place with no light for most the day and giving it about an hour of light each day after work. I will also open the lid and fan out the air and wipe down the water 2 times a day. Hopefully I will do this till my beautiful pink buffalos flourish with glory!

I really appreciate any feedback from people who take he time to help me tweak my technique. If you see any flaws please let me know and please know I greatly appreciate any help and thank you very much!

I wouldn't let them sit in a jar after they've been 100% colonized for a week. By that time they could mistakenly pin. 1-3 days would be perfectly fine to just let them veg out a bit. In the life span of a mushroom 1-3 days is a long ass time.

First, substrates are not sterilized, they are pasteurized.  This does not require a pressure cooker.

You could incubate your jars in that 65degrees just fine, it will take a little longer though...I am confused how your paragraph about your incubator went off into what sounded like a description of a terrarium.  You don't need to worry about humidity levels where your jars are incubating.  81degrees is probably a bit too high of a temperature to be keeping your jars at; it will work, but at temps above about 81degrees you increase the chance of contams catching hold and taking off in your jars.  Remember that the interior of the colonizing jar is up to a few degrees warmer than the surrounding environment.

Don't seal your jars in a bag or box, put them in a closet or on a bookshelf; they need that little bit of gas exchange they get through the filter.  It's fine to expose them to light during colonization.

Skip all that crap with the h202 (hydrogen peroxide).

Use like 5-6inches of perlite for your tub. Don't drill holes that large, follow a popular tek in regards to what size to make your FAE holes, or lack thereof.

Can you do more than just an hour of light a day? Even just leaving your tub by a sunny window?

You can skip cutting the lid to me thinks...

This post doesn't address everything, but it's a start.  :sun: ~Pixie~

Allowing a jar to colonize further for 5-7 days is good advice for new growers.  After We've done a few projects, yes, we can easily tell when it is time to birth a cake or break up and spawn our grain jars.  However, this may not be the case for someone watching mycelium colonize a cake inside of a jar for the first time.  After a jar is 100% visibly covered with mycelium a new grower should wait for 5-7days.

It's fine if some pinning occurs in your jars. No problem. ~Pixie~

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to keep your jars in darkness during the incubation period. Gastric Air Exchange, and Fresh Air Exchange are two different things. Gastric Air Exchange (GAE) are small holes (Usually your inoculation holes) with micro-pore tape over them to allow gasses like excess amounts of Co2 to escape, but not allow Fresh Air Exchange (FAE). FAE is something thats introduced to the cake after it is fully colonized, birthed, dunked, rolled, and sitting in your terrarium. FAE is the #1 pinning trigger. As Pixie/Psuper said, while incubating, it is counter intuitive to store them in fruiting conditions. Sitting on a shelf is fine.

I'm a lil confused on exactly what your referring to. I wanna say your referring to fanning inside an incubation chamber that your storing your jar in, but something is telling me you mean to take the lid off your colonizing/incubating jar to fan it and give it FAE. Just to clear this up, NEVER TAKE THE LID OFF YOUR JAR!

Also a tip, whatever your room temp is, tack on 10 extra degrees... That's what temp it will be inside your jar, because mycelium generates heat. Incubation chambers, and heaters aren't really needed unless you live somewhere freakishly cold, and your house isn't climate controlled or something... Normal comfortable room temperatures are alright for myc, (70ish degrees)

You don't need a pressure cooker to sterilize brf jars you can just use a regular pot.

You always want to dunk and roll no matter what it helps so much you really have no idea.

Watch all 4 parts of this video http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek
and follow it exactly without changing a single thing and you will have good results every time. Don't go and add your own shit or change anything or you will fuck up.

Not true, but for a noob, just fallow it to the T.

My PF cakes are 2.5 / 1 / .5 / 1.5 - 2 [Verm, WBS Flour, Coffee, Water] (Coffee is unspent, straight out of the can) I changed the recipe quite drastically... and have great results

Well obviously you can experiment once you are experienced but for someone looking for success for their first time, there is no better way.

Thank you so much for all your feedback you guys re great! First i wanna clear up something the i did not mean opening my jars and fanning i did mean my incubation chamber. Its a sealed styrofoam box. I made the chamber b/c it is winter where iam at and when we are gone at work we turn the thermostat down to save money. And everyone would bitch if i kept it 10 + degrees higher. But i ill watch that video and follw to the T. Thanks guys!

I'm nothing of an expert, still in my first grow, but I have read many a time that the bathroom is the WORST place you can do your inoculation.  I would find somewhere else like a bedroom or large closet or something that doesn't have years of moisture loving mold living in the walls.

ehh the bathroom is no way in hell the dirtiest place or worst place to do your injections in the house...the kitchen is thousands of times dirtier. I'd be way more confident in using the bathroom than I would the kitchen. Thats a fact. If the noob uses his bathroom he should be fine as long as he bleaches shit down. and use a glove box. If he wants he could use his bedroom as an alternative too.

off topic but I had a science teacher that was convinced that the toilet seat was cleaner than the counter top. We all got 2 agar dishes and 2 swabs and had to go home and collect a sample from both.
I just about shit myself when the kitchen counter culture was filled with all sorts of bacterial growth and the toilet seat culture was all but empty.

Eh nothing said was wrong. It's just a difference in opinions (not really contradictions, but I can see your point). No one really said the only way to get this done is to do Z,Y, and Z. And I think the only way to do this is to do A, B, and C only.  In mushroom growing you can do things a million different ways and get to the same point...having fruits. Nothing written was wrong per say. A side for the bathroom comment which was just a miss understanding. I could see how someone would think it's a filthy place since waste goes in and out of it.
