Outdoor growing questions

My friend's casing and cakes are spent, he wants to try to grow outdoors but has a few questions:

1. It is mid october and therefore it is a little chilly, will this be a problem?

2. He can't find hay anywhere, will grass clippings and leaves (dry and green leaves) work as good?

1. Probably.
2. Wait until spring, then use straw and dung if you can find it.

Can he keep the fungus he has until spring though? thats a long time and I would think it would just die off...

possibly in the fridge, but i'd give up on outdoor this year.
