A friend brought me some mushrooms he had found on his parents land the other day, he asked me to look and try to find if they were anything special. So here goes:

The cap is a dark orange, almost a brown color... There are a few large black spots on the caps. All the caps are about 2-3 inches across.

The gills are white, and spaced closely together.

The stem is about 3 inches high. Its white.

The mushrooms were growing near a stream bank in chest high grass. The land floods every year and there are a lot of different trees there. They were picked durning the middle of the day.

I thought of something else.

There seems to be a sent to the mushrooms, kind of a woody/mossy damp sent. I can't really explain. A spore print isn't possible now, sorry.

First of all, get a spore print and let us know what color it is.

Cut one of the mushrooms in half vertically and let us know if the gills run down the stem, are attached to it, or are free from the stem.

Is there a ring on the stem? If so, what does it look like?

Take half of the mushroom you cut in half and scrape the inside with the knife edge and let us know if it changes color (and what color) within a couple seconds, a couple minutes, or an hour.

Is there any odor to the mushrooms?

The answers to those questions, in addition to what you've already told us, may give us enough to ID your mushroom.

Happy mushrooming!

Okay, the gills run down the stem, but only a bit. There seems to be somewhat of a white ring just below where the gills stop on the stem... I haven't noticed any color change from where I did the scrape. The odor seems to be that of a woody/mossy damp area...

OK, a couple more questions. What is the texture of the surface of the cap? Is it smooth, or (looking closely) does it appear to be covered with small hairs? Is it dry, moist, slimy? Is it evenly round, or lobed? Is the edge of the cap even or wavy?

Yeah, the surface of the cap is smooth. No hairs... The edge is wavy, and the surface seems to be moist, somewhat slimy...

Does this resemble your mushroom? It's Hygrophorus olivaceoalbus, which meets your description so far. The combination of white, decurrent gills and a ring is unusual. If you rub the gills firmly with a fingertip do they feel somewhat "waxy"? This species often (but not always) has a ring.

Keep us posted.

Couldn't get your pic to come up. Anyways, I took the shrooms to a friend of mine... He said he had some like that before, so he proceded to put a stem in his mouth to try out. He chewed it up and held it under his tounge. A bit later the lights were glowing and retracting. He had images of the light changing into different things, birds, tanks and the such. I then thought that they would be okay to take so I did. The results were nice, and apparaently they aren't deadly. I do have a whole field full of the though
