Shroom ID needed for 2 florida shrooms
    #1151743 - 12/18/02 07:45 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Tip #1) When looking for shrooms, also make sure to look up occasionally, because getting lost sucks!

I was hoping someone could provide me with identification on these two types of shrooms (found in Florida). Here is the first, I believe it is some type of Panaelous..

And here is a scan of it..

I don't have a spore print of either of the shrooms yet..

SHROOM #2 ---

And a scan...

Here are some other pics I took..

And one more..

Thanks (by the way, I found shitloads of amanitas.. I'll post those pics in another post perhaps)

You really need to provide a bit more description if you want an ID, especially on "shroom 1".

"Shroom 2" looks very similar to Xeromphalina campanella, but that's basically a guess.

Happy mushrooming!

I'm not sure exactly how to describe a mushroom.. but here goes..

Shroom #1
-------------
Most of the shrooms are no larger than 1.5 inches. They have a brown domed cap, with a cap diameter of 2 mm. The gills could be seen in the above scanned image. Look like the very top of the stem is white, then quickly turns to brown. Doesn't bruise blue.

Shroom #2
-------------
Shrooms are all very tiny, with a little over 1 mm light brown caps. There are small white "veins" on the very outter edge of the cap... Gills could be seen in above scanned image. Stem is a bronish color. Does not bruise blue.

My main concern is not primarily with their identification per say, but more concerned if they are psychoactive.

There is a thread to help you on how to describe a mushroom here.

For that first mushroom we're going to definitely need a spore print. If my guess on species for the second one is correct, then they will have a white spore print. If it turns out some color other than white, let us know.

Keep at it - everybody was new to this at one time.

Here is a more formal description:

SHROOM #1
--------------
a) Found attached to small wooden chips or in sandy type soil on the forrest floor
b) Color of the cap is bronish, with light brown gills
c) Cap measures 2 mm and stem measures a little over 2mm
d) Stem is a little thick for its size, its the same brown color as the cap.
e) The cap is concave, slightly harder texture than normal
f) Spore print color is brown

g) Mushroom doesn't seem to bruise any color
h) Smells very strongly like a mushroom :]

MUSHROOM #2
-------------------
a) Found growing on the crevices/attached to horizontal stumps of trees (that have been knocked over)
b) Color of cap is a very light brownish color with tan colored gills
c) Cap measures 1 mm diameter, stem measures 1 mm
d) Stem is very thin, somewhat hollow, does not bruise any color it seems
e) Cap is mainly flat, with a slight concave on the outter edge of the cap. The very outer rim of the cap is a dark brown (hardly noticeable unless looking very closely)
f) Spore print color is white

g) Mushroom doesn't seem to bruise any color
h) Smells slightly mushroomy.

Nice descriptions, and excellent spore print photos.

The first species sounds like a Galerina (to get to species we'll need to use a microscope). You should be aware that some species of Galerina are deadly poisonous - do not eat these mushrooms. They kill by destroying the liver.

The second species sounds very much like Xerophalina campanella. Other similar species would mostly be among the Mycenas.

In case you're wondering, neither species is active.

Happy mushrooming!
