    #855001 - 08/31/02 12:25 PM (22 years, 9 months ago)

Hello peeps.
Iam doing a spore print right know, should be done in a hour, but i will go ahead and give you an idea of it. i found it in my yard, growing out of the ground, it has a white stem, brown cap. It gets darker brown in the middle and the gills look off white and its about 2 inches tall. And as I can tell there is no viel. Theres a bunch out there in groups. I will post again with the spore print. Thanx a lot

Need a better description than that to ID it. What shape is the cap? Are the gills free, attached, decurrent? Is the stem thick and fibrous, thin and fragile, hollow, solid? What shape is the stem (equal, club-shaped, pointed at the base)? Is the cap slimy, sticky, moist, dry? Is there an odor to the mushroom? If you bruise it does it change color? How big is it across? Is the flesh of the cap thick or thin? Are there any trees near to where it was growing (what kind are they)? What part of the country (world) are you in?

You have a start of a description, but we need more to tell which of the roughly 30,000 kinds of mushrooms it is. It's good to see that you understand we need to know about the spore print, too. Some of the things above will apply to the ID of your mushroom and some won't. Until we can start narrowing it down to family or genus it's difficult to say with some of them.

Happy mushrooming!

Ok here gos.

The cap is rounded like reg shrooms, no point to it. the gills look white, the stem is about the size of a coffe straw. The gills are attached.the cap looks moist, its not sticky or slimey. the whole thing isnt fragile at all.It doesnt bruise any color.theres no odor, just smells like a reg shroom.the cap is about an inch across. the cap is thin, not realy thick.Thats all i can say, the spore sprint should be done shortly, ill be right back here when it is, thanx a lot.

white spores usually mean bad. I dont think you should consider eating them.

Yeah... they don't always grow in circles. They're just one of the more common mushrooms that you'll find growing in that fairy ring formation..

Good ID. Ithink that's it, too.

Here's a list of characters which will tell you if it is Marasmius oreades:

1. Cap 1 to 2 inches wide, smooth, minutely suedelike; light tan with slightly darker central knob
2. Gill white or yellowish white, well spaced, lightly attached to stalk or free
3. Stalk 1 1/2 - 3 inches high, pale yellow to light tan, slender
4. Found on lawns
5. Spore print white to light tan

If it matches all of these *exactly*, then it is Marasmius oreades.

Although it's not on Dr. Bessette's list, the stem should be very tough, as Mr Mushrooms mentioned.

The white ones are probably Clitocybe dealbata, which contains high levels of muscarine. Symptoms of the poisoning are nausea, vomiting, painful constriction of the muscles at the back of the mouth, painful urination, intense sweating, and profuse secretion of tears and saliva. The symptoms usually begin to be noticeable in 15 to 30 minutes. What fun!
