Fuck Florida!!!!
    #9739732 -

Well, just went out and uncovered my plants, and it was pure disaster.I lost my Jade plants,a bunch of cacti, and my lil baby Brigesii had small pups on it,and they turned to mush.I also lost my Persian shield plant,as well as a bunch of others. Also my three pineapple plants turned yellow, and I don't expect them to make it either. The poppies also are pretty much gone. The leaves are totally curled up,and they are all laying over limp, and brown. The bad part about this whole ordeal is that I had them all covered too,and the cold still got them. You know plants are the only thing I have in life that brings me joy,and I feel like I lost a family member or something.is this normal to feel this way over some plants?Well,my day is ruined, and I'm going to try and go back to sleep to forget about this horrible misfortune.Anybody else in Florida loose anything?I swear if I ever get up some money I'm moving out of the states, and moving to the tropics. It's even in the 30's down in Miami!!! and the fruit crops are really suffering.I think I'll eventually move down to South America where I can be warm, and enjoy my plants all year round.

Sorry to hear man, I've lost plants to freeze before, it can be quite traumatizing. I'm quite attached to my plants as well.

It's too late now, but for future reference, covering your plants only helps when your expecting a light frost. It helps with frost damage, but when temps drop well below freezing your only hope is to bring them inside.

From my experience, most columnar cacti such as T. Pachanoi can tolerate temps as low as 20 with little to no damage if they are covered. Uncovered, contact with frost itself will frostbite the cactus.

Best thing to do now is to salvage what you can, take cuttings of cacti if possible, and sit back and smoke a fattie. Or if none is available, liquor helps with the pain a bit

Good luck man, in time youll have more plants; youll be back in business before you know it.

Thanks for the replies guys,I feel better now:grin:It's just one of those things in life you have to deal with. Thanks for the offer on the seeds bloodnashes666:grin:I have tons of seeds though, which is a good thing, because I'm going to grow a little bit of everything I have.My garden this year will put last years to shame.Well anyway,I lost quite a few small Peruvianus, cuttings,Mamm cuttings,Opuntia, and my Tersheckii's,and other various cacti suffered some frost bite. The whole top of one Terscheckii turned brown. Also,I don't know where I'll be able to find another Persian shield plant, and my poppies look quite horrid.I doubt they will recover.I wonder how Amberica's outdoor poppies and plants fared?Yeah doc,I hear ya,and I've lived in places where it stays freezing months on end,but it's not supposed to get that cold here, and if I was up north all my plants would have been indoors. But yeah, like you said,it is the nature of Horticulture, and next year a green house will be constructed in case of freak occurrence's in nature:grin:

None of my plants suffered from the cold, knock on wood. Hopefully there will not be temps this low again. I plan on throwing out a few more poppy seeds today/tomorrow in some dixie cups and transplanting them as soon as they get just above sprout size.

Hopefully you can recover something from the loss, but you also have the fungi experiment, so you got a little side fun.

Can someone comment on the min survival temps of the following:

Kratom
sceletium tortuosum
Delosperma bosseranum
Calea

Thanks. Also, I knew of a guy here in N. FL that got mangos and avocados through many cold winters. His secret: He wrapped the trunks and main limbs with lots of cheap christmas lights. I think the same thing could also be done with pots by just placing a couple coils inside etc.

You lucky girl:grin:Well,it probably didn't get as cold where your at as where I'm at,since you're further down south.I stopped getting mad about it,because that wont solve anything.I have tons of poppy seeds,so I'll start again.I have to do it soon though, because we both know how hot,and humid it starts to get in June:grin:

My calea survived well into the 30's, but if it gets even a light frost on it, it's dead. The frost took a plant that was almost a year old like it was candy from a baby.
I would assume it's fairly the same for the rest, Kratom is native to Oriental areas so it should be able to take some extreme temps just not prolonged.

How cold did it get last night in your neck of the woods?

Yeah, well it was 10 degrees or so, I just covered them with pots and boxes and I guess it was good enough for them.
I start most plants indoors anyway and then move out, so the June heat can  :blowme:, figuratively.

Wind chill kept most alive, the wind kept a lot from gathering frost.

We had -15f here last night.
Sorry to hear about your plants man. Are they in the ground or in pots? I would just move them indoors over night next time it gets that cold if they are in pots.
Moving to the tropics would be kick ass. Hell, it would be nice just to visit an area like that.

I'd love to move to Peru and just spend the rest of my days in a hamac with a few 5m tall San Pedros around me
