Mg seeds & freezing
    #429388 - 10/18/01 01:31 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

well, i dont know, i thought i'd post here, since the info i need is more cultivation/life cycle related. Say you took a pile of morning glory seeds, already assayed for bioactivity, and put them in some water to soak...and after a few hours, put them in the freezer in hopes of rupturing the seeds and releasing the lsa. Obviously, i'm not worried about any degradation of the chemical, but whats your opinion as to wether or not the seeds will pop? They appear well capable of handleing a winter, and their continued presence on my neighbors fence is proof of that, but will they absorb enough water to pop? Opinions welcome, havent been able to find anything on the life cycle of mg seeds. Stay frosty.

I'm not sure I understand why you are putting them in the freezer, unless you want to save the seeds for later use. Freezing them certainly wont hurt them, but I think they will be much less likely to pop, since almost all seeds are temperature sensitive, and won't open till the soil around them reaches a certain temp. Usually in the mid to upper 30's, depending on the type of plant. As soon as you take them out of the freezer and let them warm up, they shoul open very quickly.
