Yeah, Razoom's posts have that effect because he is using a translator to convert his posts from Russian to English...

Which make the posts no less amusing, yet he is almost certainly more eloquent in his own language.

No, not at all.

I think a dog is a good intermediate step between the meixner text and trying it on a human.  The meixner test should test for amatoxins, but what if there is a chemical in the mushroom that interferes with the test?  Are you really going to stake your life on the color of a drop of mushroom sample on a newspaper?

If the dog dies that would suck but it wouldn't be nearly as bad as a human amatoxin poisoning.

There is a time and place for animal research, and that time and place is when it might save someones life.

You are a cool guy Alan to hang out with and listen to- but that, no matter how you try to spin it- is rediculous.
Just because they are 'sensitive' to the toxins doesn't mean you will get any valid research or information due to the pain tollerance of a dog, and the fast motabolism, tollerance, overall health, age, diet and difference in breeds.  Some dogs are much more resistant and walk it off like nothing.. at least nothing you could tell by pure viewing.

To use that information souly to validate consumption is crazy. Without LAB conditions, your gaining no official information... and definatly nothing you could use to say its safe to consume.

Is this the kill your dog tek?  Or more important, the kill yourself tek?  I have seen my dog munch through amanitas and got many down before I could stop her, and she showed no signs that she had consumed anything.

Not ALL dogs react the same way to toxins.

Controlled experiments are one thing, back yard dog teks are another.

Still much love for you man

I don't think Alan is that eager to get high.  But maybe some people are.  If you gave a dog what is probably a high dose of said mushroom, and no ill effects or death are observed, then you could guess that it is probably safe for human consumption, since dogs and humans are susceptible to most of the same toxins.  I've never heard of different tolerance due to breed, but certainly the size of the animal (associated with breed) would effect it's tolerance for a substance.
Beagles have been used for amatoxin testing because their susceptibility is similar to that of humans.  The do show symptoms of poisoning, they can die from it, and they also tend to show signs of recovery when silymarin is administered.

All fo that said, I wouldn't do any of that because I liked dogs and am not that concerned over the activity of a mushroom to put a dog in danger.
But as Alan said, if you were dead set on trying it, it is probably better to test it on a dog first and then a human.
Though I can understand the ethical argument that it's a human desire to find out, so a human should test it rather than test it on an intelligent yet unwitting canine.

But the deserted mice react. If such mouse eat seeds datura, she runs with convex eyes on all house from a corner in a corner to look at it(her) terribly.
If she eat leaf salvia or cactic that crept away in a mink

I wouldn't bioassay a little lepiota, a lot of them have amatoxins.  I'd try a meixner test first, if that is negative then feed it to a dog, if the dog lives then feed it to a human.

Hey MycoAu, all the samples were shipped off to various locations. I think one that you and R.M. found on the June foray was deposited at the Ronald L. McGregor Herbarium at KU.

Several more collections were made on my property in the following weeks -- the were quite gregarious. The last of the season was collected a couple miles south of Lawrence in August by S&K, on an otherwise bland property in terms of mycoflora. It was relatively close to the KU's B. Reserve we were all so impressed with in July but what a difference a mile or three can make.

The patch at my farm is located so conveniently that if the spring skies are parsimonious with regard to rain I will be able to irrigate. :igor:

Batten down the hatches.

I think you are ok so long as you are are allowing the dog to eat the mushrooms of its the own free will (i.e. not force feeding it mushroom puree through CureCat's beer bong) and only after providing full disclosure of the possible consequences.

Based upon some of the other posts (and photos) on this forum, I thought the general consensus was that what happens between a person and a consenting dog is no one's business.
