That's what I read.

Hops, Humulus lupulus, is in the same family, Cannabidaceae, as another well-known plant many of us have enjoyed.  There are only two genera in the family, Cannabis and Humulus.  It was supposed they were narcotic.

Quote:
Physiological effects -- The odorous emanations of hops (vapor of the volatile oil) possesses narcotic properties. Hence, a pillow of hops promotes sleep, as I have several times witnessed. Moreover, we are told that stupor has occasionally been induced in persons who have remained for a considerable time in hop warehouses. The lupulinic grains are aromatic and tonic. They appear also to possess soothing, tranquillizing, and, in a slight degree, sedative and soporific properties. But the existence of any narcotic quality has been strongly denied by Dr. Bigsby, Magendie, and others. Dr. Maton found that it allayed pain, produced sleep, and reduced the frequency of the pulse from ninety-six to sixty in twenty-four hours. Both infusion and tincture of hops are mild but agreeable aromatic tonics. Their sedative, soporific, and anodyne properties are very uncertain.

No, not at all.

I think a dog is a good intermediate step between the meixner text and trying it on a human.  The meixner test should test for amatoxins, but what if there is a chemical in the mushroom that interferes with the test?  Are you really going to stake your life on the color of a drop of mushroom sample on a newspaper?

If the dog dies that would suck but it wouldn't be nearly as bad as a human amatoxin poisoning.

There is a time and place for animal research, and that time and place is when it might save someones life.

There might be other animals that would work as well as a dog but not be quite as cute.  I am not sure which animal that would be, deer, squirrels, birds, etc are not affected by amatoxins.  I suggested a dog because I know that they are very sensitive to them.

Of course the ethical implications are interesting - Whose dog do you use?  Certainly not one that anyone is attached to.  I'd adopt one from a kill shelter that is about to be put it down.  They kill thousands of dogs every day that no one wants to adopt.  I adopted a rottweiler once that was about to be put down, this dog tried to eat children every chance she got.  No joke, it was embarrassing to walk the dog because every time a baby stroller or child passed the dog would use 100% of its might to try to break free from the leash to go eat the kid, and it was a big scary attack dog.  Also it would poo and pee on the floor every day, even when all the doors were open.  These behaviors are definitely related to the fact that it would cower in the corner every time I picked up a newspaper.  I eventually had to give the dog back when I moved into a house with white carpeting and they told me that was the dogs last chance and they killed it.

I'm going to say that I agree with you of course, but I think you may have opened a can of worms.  Not that that is a bad thing necessarily..

Sad history.
At the father the wife, lived of fiber. His(its) grandmother has not given her to breathe by a pillow.
I think out of envy to vigour.
Likely majority of animals should live on freedom. Also there are mushrooms)

Yeah, Razoom's posts have that effect because he is using a translator to convert his posts from Russian to English...

Which make the posts no less amusing, yet he is almost certainly more eloquent in his own language.

George, did you save a sample (or at S&K's home) of that Lepiota?  I can't remember where it was found either.  Sad.

BTW, I know several dogs locally who are aspiring to be mycologists specializing in edibility of unknowns.

I've tried it

I'd rather smoke the weed. Burning hops tastes/smells a bit like burning shoes... though, oddly, its not that bad. I don't really remember the effects so it would  seem they weren't outstanding. If anything a slight mellowing effect with some drowsiness.

i'd rather drink mine, wherein i love the effects. i'm getting to the point where i don't like alcohol as much unless it's a hopped beverage.
