Active Lepiota???

Just curious about these guys, anybody know any good info on this one?

Since the bluing imitates the oxidation of other active mushrooms, it would be easy to suggest it is psychoactive.  However, until tests are run I do not think anyone knows.

George found a similar species last year.  I didn't hear whether it was active or not.

If it was active it wouldn't do that.  GeorgeM noticed his blue fading as well.

Ps. naematiloformis stained blue at first but once dry was brown, those are active for sure

I wouldn't bioassay a little lepiota, a lot of them have amatoxins.  I'd try a meixner test first, if that is negative then feed it to a dog, if the dog lives then feed it to a human.

i meant their were bioassays done on Ps. naematoliformis, i dont recommend eating mushrooms that stain blue just to see if they are active

What was the result?

I would be completely comfortable attributing the fading of my bluing Lepiota collection to my lack of attention to proper storage techniques. I did have a few that retained the color at least as long as they were in my possession. There was also some variation in the degree of bluing exhibited.    :ashamed:

As Alan stated, performing the Meixner Test would certainly be warranted before even considering a bioassay of some little mushroom in this genus.

Hopefully more of these will be collected this year, one quick way to rule out the similarly appearing L. cristata cluster of mushrooms is to examine spore shape. Cristata possesses bullet shaped spores that are clearly truncate while Caerulescens has elliptical spores.

:psychsplit:

the test subject was given 1grm of dried material, he reported euphoria and mild visual disturbances

another member on here gave some samples to a buddy and this buddy reported the same thing as the subject mentioned above, same dose 1grm dried material.

I think subjects testing these would experience more of the classic psilocybin intoxication symptoms if they were to eat 2.5grms or more.

Nice.  And you call yourself a scientist?  Control, control, control.  Always set up a control, always take extensive notes!  This haphazard, slapstick, Persian bazaar method of yours is completely unacceptable.  I train, I teach, I lead by example and this is the workmanship I receive for my efforts?!?  We're supposed to be building something here, remember?  It's m-y-c-o-l-o-g-y!  This isn't some Suzy-Homemaker, Erector Set playtime!

Either shape up or ship out.  Ugh, I'm glad I got that out of my system.  /sarcasm

I know what you mean.  At the end of the season I found pieces and parts of mushrooms all over the place.  Some completely without recognition.  Sometimes I think I'm not a mycologist at all; I'm just a packrat that likes mushrooms.

Don't be ashamed, George.  You're in good company.

Excellent link and advice. I will have to try this in the upcoming season.

I asked Else if the bluing was perhaps due to the same active chemical that causes bluing in "psilocybin mushrooms", but she said she did not know..... in a concerned way, like she was worried I might try and eat some.

I sequenced a few of those little blue Lepiotas, and I must say that the DNA extract looked pretty awesome!  It was kool aid blue!  Even Else thought it was pretty neat.

  Yeah, it was the best part.  I almost didn't post any of it because I thought some might take it the wrong way.  You've seen my chambers, the room I call "other."  It's not exactly organized.  I learned a new trick though.  Lysol!  Too many old mushrooms in a room can smell a little funky--a mix between old Gym socks and dead birds.

The preceding description was in jest as well

That's actually why I said it!  I reheheheally like Valerian and it smells like ass.  I take it if I can't sleep.  For me it's a nostalga smell.  I had lots of it around the time I first tripped on mushrooms.  Hops are awesome too.  I bought an old house that had Hop vines in the back of the garden.  Someone had planted them there in the early part of last century.  I used to harvest them and get the pollen off it them in a paper bag.  I tried smoking it like shake but it never really did anything for me.  I like the smell of hops.
