Snake-like polypore similar to ganoderma lucidum
    #9687404 - 01/27/09 07:47 AM (15 years, 23 days ago)

I live in sandy oak woods in south texas, and sometimes there's this polypore that looks almost exactly like a copperhead snake. It's creepy, but if you know what a copperhead looks like you'd know it has similar colors to a red reishi. It grows mostly straight up, as if it's a copperhead rising up out of the ground and looking straight ahead. We have a lot of copperheads also so it's odd. I only noticed it after I dug a giant hole in the ground years ago. It's hard, woody, and takes forever to rot. I'm not looking for a full description and I don't plan on eating it, I just want to know if any of you have any clue as to what it might be or know of anything that looks similar, because I haven't seen it in a while so I can't get any details on it right now. It seems to grow with oak roots but I'm not sure.

Probably needs oak debris. I'll keep an eye out for it and I'll take notes of the details or send a sample to someone if I find it. When I first saw it I thought it might be from another planet. It's so weird that it looks like a copperhead.

It could also be ganoderma lucidum.. Depending on where they grow from, they will look different
