ganoderma lucidum
    #4393818 - 07/11/05 10:24 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I found a patch of G. lucidum recently. What a beautiful mushroom.

I think I may have actually found it last year. This specimen was growing nicely in a nearby park, but typhoon 23 came along and ripped out the tree before the stalk developed.

are you sure they are lucidium. Tsuage, which has the same healing properties, grows on pine. I thought those logs looked like a white pine...

Hey I like it when my old posts get dragged up!
Actually I think you are right in saying these are more like G. tsugae. I just looked it up in a guide that uses color drawings and the coloring much more closely matches tsugae. And as you suggested, they were growing off/near the roots of a pine.
But when the heck are these then?
I found them in a park not associated with pine trees. They appear to be the young fruiting body, only 7 cm high or so.

Do you think they could be the same mushroom? Any tips for distinguishing lucidum and tsugae?

I usually find reishi on maple.

well, it does have the varnished stem, but the new growth looks a little yellow. It pcould indicate many things, one possible being that there is a high dulfur content in the nearby soil. Or coloring issues with your camera. AS long as it mostly fits the bill, few mushrooms are alike the reishi.

ALl muhsrooms have phenotypes like we do, so they have differnt and wide gene expression.

Love

Thanks.
That sucker was YELLOW! Could it too be confused with reishi?
