Ganoderma tsugae........pics, can I clone this?
    #1546339 - 05/13/03 09:41 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Here is what I believe to be Ganoderma tsugae. I've been watching them around my area all year.....these are old, dried, and HARD brackets that I plucked from the base of a large oak. Does anyone know if I could clone this dried shelf?

The young mushrooms looked like young reishi, with a red, yellow, and white rainbow. Over time they took on a reddish-violet varnished look. The pores on the tan underside are about the size of the head of a pin. They are about the consistancy of soft wood right now. From what I read, they have the same health benefits of reishi, and I'd like to give them a go. Thanks for looking!

I'm not sure if you can clone it, but it's definitely cultivatable.

For advice on its cultivation, check in the Cultivation Forums.

Happy mushrooming!

i believe you can rehydrate many dried shelf fungi for cloning purposes.

Yea.....thanks toxicman, come to think of it.....I suppose I'm in the wrong forum

Perhaps a soak may do the trick......

While I'm here......does anyone know any techniques for utilizing the medicinal properties of this mushroom? I have heard of the chinese soaking the mushrooms in wine for many years and drinking the tonic to their health. Fungi Perfecti sells alcohol based reishi extracts to add to drinks by the drop. Do you, or anyone you know dig reishi? What about capsulizing the fruitbodies?

I attended a talk last October on extracting mushrooms for medicinal purposes.

They would just cut them up with tin snips, grind them to powder with a blender, then boil it in water for a litle while just like making tea. They also indicated that, for many mushrooms, an alcohol extract was also necessary to get all the useful compounds. All they would do is take some of the powdered mushroom, put it in a mason jar, add vodka, put the lid on, and let it extract for several hours to days. After extracting with alcohol, mix the two extracts together. If it's a bit too dilute (it often is), just reduce the volume like you would in cooking - in a small pan on the stove.

Good luck and happy mushrooming!

Thank you so much.....I think I will begin to foray for them and use them for their said health benefits.......I am also trying to cultivate ganoderma lucidum mushrooms and it is taking to the local oak like wildfire....I am very excited!

I also found it interesting that I find this mushroom on oak......It says in the guides that it almost always grows on hemlock, and reishi on all hardwoods......when it grows around here(middle MD) it is always at the very base of oak trees. It seems to match the ID of tsugae perfectly, does anyone think anything otherwise?

Thanks again.
