Ganoderma lucidum?
    #5783657 - 06/23/06 12:16 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

There is a brownish color on the underside, but I can't really say if that was caused by bruising or not...it bruises a little if I push on it really hard...any ideas?

Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide
And comforting me with its three warm and wild eyes.

On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.

Certainly a ganoderma. I'm not so good on differentiating lucidum vs. tsugae (besides geography).

xmush is right. We need to know which state you're in and what kind of tree it was growing from (basically evergreen vs hardwood).

Happy mushrooming!

I live in Pennsylvaina, and I don't remember what it was growing off of...but I'm pretty sure it was a hardwood.

Ganoderma lucidum grows on hardwood.

Ganoderma lucidum

Ganoderma tsugae prefers conifers.

Ganoderma tsugae

How widespread are those species? Any found around Oregon / Washington / British Columbia? I've seen a few ganoderma's around but nothing that looks like a real true reishi.

I think G. lucidum is more common in the eastern US.
It is known to grow all over the place just about.. in temperate and tropical zones.. USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa, and probably more places.

So, would it be alright to ingest in tea? I'm really not 100% sure it was on a hardwood, but I think it was...even if it is tsguae, would it be okay to ingest? That website you gave me conflicts with other websites I have read. Thanks.

G. lucidum, and G. tsugae are unparalleled native US tonic medicines, as far as I am concerned (G. sinensis, or black Reishi is actually my favorite though). They are highly immuno-therapeutic, reportedly anti-carcinogenic, and, as my energy work has demonstrated, help to dissolve energetic blockages and serve as efficient neutralizers of emotional / mental conditions. If you feel nervous and excited, they will soothe, if you feel lazy, they tend to invigorate!

Gently boiling for 10-15 minutes results in the tea of my preferred potency (in a covered, non-reactive pan).

In simpler terms, both species are considered equally potent. Some people still debate as to whether G. lucidum and G. tsugae are 2 different species at all.

I believe the Ganoderma in the photos are a "reishi" species.

Also,

These mushrooms tend to hold a lot water when fresh (if the environment is moist) and mold easily as a result, therefore they require a very desiccating (dry) place for drying and preservation..

Or, if you intend to use them for tea in the near future (within a week), put them into a paper bag in the fridge. That will prevent molding on a temporary basis.

Ganoderma lucidum can also occur on Conifers besides hardwoods .

G. tsugae occurs only on Conifers

If your tree was a Hardwood then It's G. lucidum.

If your tree was a Conifer then break open......G. tsugae has white flesh inside.......G. lucidum does not and is darker inside especially near the tubes ( though may be pallid inside nearer to the cap surface )

G. lucidum occurs in Calif. but the almost identical G. oregonense is very common from California to the other places you mentioned and is by far the most common of the 'Ling Chis' in the places it occurs.

They can be highly variable in appearance not having any type of stem being present and not varnished to the well developed long polished varnished stem usually seen in pics......almost impossible to find em without bugs.

Hello! First  time that I found this type of mushroom in the north east of Romania. It is ganoderma? The colour is very dark brown and it was growing on a dead hardwood.
