Premature pins on poo substrate
    #9597291 -

Hello, I am running grain on to horse poo, with verm and gypsum at a 10 parts, to 3 parts, to 1 part ratio. This has worked well with no problems in the past. Now I have a rather large tray where pins have formed on one half of the tray. I have not introduced fresh air, light, or temperature change to my knowledge, but none the less there are pins on the half of the tray that colonized first, with sporadic pins now developing on the side that is less colonized. My best guess is the tin foil was to loose around the tray, and that is what triggered pinning. The whole tray is probably 95 percent done, but the side of the tray with pins has thicker, more white mycelium. My question is what to do now? Should I leave the tray in my incubator for a couple more days, allowing the pins to continue to develop there, and also filling in the last 3 percent of substrate. Should I do a casing layer right away, or go with out a casing layer for the first flush? Like I said its a rather large caseing, about 4 1/2 inches thick, so I want to try and maintain the best possible pinsets possible. Thanks alot in advance...

Fruits can grow even if a monotub, tray, or cake isn't fully colonized. Either you have a contam or you just exposed it to fruiting conditions mistakenly. I'm assuming the later is true as you'd know if you had a contam by now. Sometimes it's just MYC time to fruit. My last monotub fruited all by itself without any sort of work on my part. Sometimes it just happens. You might as well just go with it at this point. They'res a good chance that last 5% might colonize too. I wouldn't worry about it. If you did you used a multispore syringe then shit just pins at different times. My tub of PE all pinned at different times. It didn't stop pinning for 2 weeks. Is that a little weird and unusual...yes...is it out of the norm...no.
