incubator temperature measurement Teq
    #9537077 -

I have noticed in the #myco chat room that the question of incubator temp comes up a lot. The problem is people don't understand that the temperature inside of a colonizing jar is higher then the temperature  of the incubator. Here is a way to get a "real" measurement of your jars.

Note; As a substrate colonizes, the metabolizing of the substrate with mycelium growth causes the mass  to raise in temperature. This method will give you only a close proximation of the temperature of a substrate colonizing. The temperature will be only a little higher for the colonizing jars.

Needed;

Your incubator  { There is so many Teq's out there I am not going to add another }

A Jar of dry rice. { The jar needs to be of size and type you use most often } {any rice will work as long as it is dry. Wet would be a contaminate problem. }

A thermometer, you need either a stem type, or a indoor/outdoor type with a probe.
    Here is some links to the type you'll need;
    A stem type
    A usb      logging probe Thermometer {this what I use}
    Another probe type. cheap

Set up:
  Take your jar of rice and seal it with a tight lid. The lid needs a hole drilled in the center just big enough to fit the stem or probe of your Thermometer. Place the stem/probe of your Thermometer in the hole and adjust it so the tip is not touching the bottom of jar. Lock  it in place by using silicone caulk or 5min epoxie. You want to get the temperature reading from dead center of the jar.

You want your temperature of you rice jar to be at 80F. This will mean your colonizing jars will be approxmently 83f to 85f depending on growth rate { faster growth more heat. }

I hope this helps.

Side note wonder why I do not post much? Although Iv been here since the start? I can not write worth a damn.  It's only taken me two hours to write this :rolleyes: sober mind you.

As soon as I get my camera fixed I'll write this up better.

Nice writeup. bear in mind though that with larger grain jars or bulk substrates will produce much more heat than a 1/2 pint pf jar. So reduce the temp a little.
