My hunt (PICS)
    #945560 - 10/09/02 11:55 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Well, unfortuently I didn't find much except one species. Im thinking its some sort of Trametes. But would like a positive ID if possible.

Found on an old oak log I believe. Grown together, no spore print obtainable, not much of a stalk or stem. Very woody feel, grown in teirs.

Heres some pics of them:

And the underside. I Dont know why the pores look so funny...

And some interesting animals I came accross.

Heres a small banana slug!

Crazy ass looking spider. Thing was a good 2 inches in diameter...fuckin huge!

Found this growin inside an old hollow redwood tree. Looks like its starting to sprout roots or something.

Hope you enjoyed

I would go with Trametes hirsuta.

Nice photos. I especially like the one with the wolf spider carrying her babies on her abdomen.

that is a polypore called a turkey tail. trametes versicolor. that is an awsome shroom. in asia they sell 100 million dollars a year in anti cancer drug called krestin that comes from that shroom.

Wow...thats crazy, I had no idea that they were the babies. I was wondering what they were but I was a little timid on getting any closer.

Wolf spider? Arent they really poisonus? Ive never seen one before but I saw about 10 on this one trail. They were freaking me out because they were so big. I was about 6 inches away from that one when I took a picture, lucky she didn't bite me.

I dont think its a turkey tail, but its a very close realitive. Its the "Hairy turkey tail". Dint know they were edible, my book says they arent really that good, because its kinda hairy and very tough! :frown:

The only venomous spiders in the main US are Black Widows and Brown Recluse. Some of the others will bite and it will hurt, but you are in no real danger. Wolf spiders will bite if you mess with them, but they don't want anything to do with you - after all, you could crush one effortlessly with one finger. To them you are potentially something that wants to kill and eat them, so they mostly want to get away.

David Arora has a really great recipe for Turkey Tails. It's "boil for 62 hours, sqeeze thoroughly, and serve forth". My mouth is watering already.

uhm, the brown recluse has a somewhat southeast inclination, and is unknown in colder climates or the southwest.
wolf spiders are cool.
black widows are everywhere but hard to find if you want one.

the worst, imo, are the aggressive house spiders in the genus tegenaria.
people call them hobo spiders.
the reason they are the worst FOR ME is that every night a tribe of males (the more venemous of the two options) come cavorting into my house at top speed, hunting for love along the edges of my walls.
they come by the score.
and i have given up on throwing them out the door, the bites they leave are similar to the brown recluse, causing a necrotic flesh rot and a gaping hole of a wound, even tho the initial bite is rarely felt.
fuck that shit.

I believe that the hobo spider and the brown recluse are in the same genus, hence they possess a very similar hemotoxin.
In the seattle area there is a hydro supply store called the indoor sun shop. excellent store that even has san pedro cactus rarely.
anyway, they sell hobo spider traps if you want to get rid of them for good, even though I like spiders a lot, the danger of getting bitten is high if they come cavorting into your house all horny then get pissed off if they cant get any lovin'.
