Haruki Murakami and mushrooms...
    #9372531 -

Anybody ever check out the Japanese author Haruki Murakami? He wrote Kafka on the Shore, The Windup Bird Chronicles and a bunch of other stuff. Pretty surreal and wonderfully descriptive, weird stuff. I'm re reading Kafka on the Shore now and noticing a LOT of oblique mushroom references both in his descriptions and as plot vehicles, even though non of the references are overtly to psychedelic mushrooms as yet. Anybody else notice this, or do I perhaps have a case of seeing what's on my mind pop out of everything... Either way, if you haven't heard of him, I'd bet a lot of you guys would like him...

I've read a lot of his stuff and like him very much. Picking wild mushrooms is a very common hobby in Japan and mushrooms in general are much more a part of Japanese mainstream culture than they are in Western countries. There was quite a bit of resistance among mushroom collectors in Japan against outlawing psychedelic mushrooms but eventually idiocy won out. Very few mushroom collectors in Japan trip on psychedilc shrooms, however. I read Kafka on the Shore a couple years ago but can't remember the mushroom references.

Great topic, btw.

I read his book on the Tokyo subway bombings as well as Dance, Dance, Dance.

Not my favorite author, but very interesting.

Those two aren't as good as Kafka, Norwegian Wood and Wind-Up

imo

I like him very much - repetitive, but I appreciate what's repeated. My favorite is Hard-Boiled Wonderland.

What are some examples of these references? I don't remember any.

Well for example, the children hunting mushrooms on the hill before they mysteriously collapse comes to mind. I think he mentions in passing that another character is an amateur mushroom hunter. Off hand I can't remember, but I know that I saw a few scattered references that seemed somewhat noteworthy. Glad I'm not the only one to read this guy...
