Possible Psiloycbe Pelliculosa?
    #937816 - 10/06/02 11:20 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I found these two different types of mushrooms while walking down a road... The one on the right seems most promising to me.. The gills are a bit darker then the ones on the left, and the spore print was black as hell. The one on the left has a lighter spore print, it seems a bit less black and a bit more purplish, but I'm still waiting for it to drop more spores and reveal its color more.

It doesn't look like it in the picture but the stalk on the mushroom on the right is white, maybe a bit off white. It was found growing along the side of a road in B.C.

The one on the left was found growing in a spot in the woods where a cabin had been built and the ground disturbed, there were MANY of these present.

Any ideas?

NEW picture, slightly clearer

hey doc, i like people who post pics.
so dont get me wrong.
ive been touchy today for some reason.

it seems like i've read enough of your posts now to expect more from you.

have you checked to see if the purply spored one is psilocybe like?
what are the characteristics of psilocybes that distinguish them from psathyrellas, conocybes, mycenas or panaeoli?

and if the one on the right did have black spores, what then would it be?

they look like interesting mushrooms, but its like they're in a cage out of reach and i can only see that there are mushrooms there.
its frustrating that they look promising.
please help me.

Post a picture of the mushroom from above and beneath with a picture of the spore print.
Before you post an identification request in this forum, it?s important you know which features are needed so the mushroom can be identified.

A good picture of the mushrooms is invaluable.
Along with the pictures, and even more so if you don? have pictures please give an accurate description including

a. Habitat (where and what does it grow on)
b. Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
c. Measurements of cap and stem.
d. Characteristics of the stem (color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
e. Characteristics of the cap (color, texture, concical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
f. Spore print color (very important!)
g. Color that the mushroom briuses
h. Scent of mushroom

For more detailed recomendations please visit this thread.

For the explanation of mycological terms please refer to www.shroomery.org/glossary2/ .

i would like to help, mr docpsilocybin a.k.a. idontknownothinboutshroomsyetimtryintalearn

I appologize.

In the first picture, there are three mushrooms visible. I'll start off by describing the ones on the left of the penny:

Spore Print: Slightly purplish, it looks like a cross between brown black and purple.. The spore prints are as of yet too light to get a real idea.

Cap: The caps are from 1" to 2" across, the coloration is kind of a peachy brown, with the outside edge (about a 1cm ring around the outside of the cap) being a deeper (wetter?) looking brownish.. This discoloration is apparent in all of them. Could be a possible bruising?

Stem: Stems are hollow (viewed after being cut with scissors) and are very thin walled. The are also quite durable(stiff). They're anywhere from 2" to 3" in length. and the diameter is approximately 1mm - 2mm. Stems were a light white to olive color when picked, but seem to have darkened (bruised?) to an almost purplish brown color.

Gills: The gills where anywhere from a dull whitish grey, to more of a greyish brown color when first picked.. All have deepened to a light to dark grey color since picking. They're spaced together fairly close, about 1 or 2 gills for every mm, and they are not attached to the stem. They connect to the edge of the cap in a very sharp point.

This mushrooms smells very mushroomy.

It was found growing in disturbed soil at the site of a cabin that was built in the forrest. Just growing out of soil that had been torn up about 2 years previous.

I appologize for the shitty pictures, I had to borrow a friends camera and I'm not very good at using it.

I'll post the description of the other mushroom once it's completed.

The combination of the spore print color and habitat suggests a Psilocybe species. The fact that it doesn't bruise blue means it's almost certainly not active. Was the cap slimy, moist, dry when you found it?

Happy mushrooming!

After picking, stems deepend to a purplish color. Also, there the stalks where shaggy looking before picked, and after picked that also disappeared. Caps were slightly slimey when picked, it was also wet out. Very smooth caps, slightly slimey.

Notice the hairs/fibers on the stalks?

Habitat

Close up

I believe these spore prints to be a brown - purple... They're very faint though, it's hard to tell.

I have never found pelliculosa, but I believe the spore prints would be the same as other psilocybes. Having said that, I would have to draw the conclusion that those are not pellis because that is not the color of a normal purple brown spore print, which would be much darker. Nice pics though.

It looks very Psilocybe-like. Perhaps Hypholoma dispersum (= Naematoloma dispersum). I find H. dispersum in association with Psilocybe pelliculosa and it looks fairly similar to your specimens. When I find P. pelliculosa, many of the specimens show a tiny bit of bluing at the stem base (already present, not after bruising) also the cap has a gelatin like covering that peels off easily. See image below.
