First off, it f owuld really be a miracle if you were to find just one panaeoplus subbalteatus in manure in New Jersey. YEs that would be a miracle.
However, uin a compost heap or rotted haystacks left out since last winter to compost you might find a few subs.
My frineds form Dung Bros, ususally have subbs intheir compost heaps. this year only a few came up. otyher years pounds.
But in New Jersey you would be better off looking in closets and basements or attics for in vitro shrooms.
You ask Quote:
turnin black and kinda going to a purplelish would that be good to eat?
Psilocybine containing mushrooms do not turn purple. They stain blue, at m least most do at one time or another.
Purple-brown to chocolate brown are the spore color of Psilocybe species. And it looks nbothing like the way you think purple looks like.

junk,, when in doubt throw it out.... if your looking for pan subbs.. black spore prints will be the only one... black is black.. no brown no purple,, black as the night.... keep looking...
happy hunting nofindum......
by the way any unidentified mushroom can be bad to eat.. even one's that have a positive ID can be bad to eat...
You can go from a scale of sick to dead.. be careful....
