Plastic or clay?
    #9339355 - 11/30/08 06:41 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

I am getting different input on the selection of pots for cacti.

i use a mixture of both...
i prefer clay for my lophs as it allows the soil to dry out much faster and allows good levels of oxygenation in the soil.
alot of my trichocereus are in clay pots also, although plastic is fine for them as they are less prone to rot than lophophora.

i use plastic for grafts because you can't buy small square clay pots and square pots obviously fit together better and take up less space.
if i could buy square clay pots i would.

this is also something that is climate specific, my plants get wet quite often in this climate so clay is the best choice for me.

the other thing i like about clay pots is that it is easier to tell when the soil has dried out...
just from holding the pot, its moisture level and the temperature of the pot you can judge how wet the soil is inside  :yesnod:

Thanx . My Moms , with the ultimate green finger says clay pots. A book said plastic.  She has also givin a  little insight of making my T. Pachanoi's flower.  The cuttings are two years old & about 3' tall. She keeps telling me that they need a rest period with no ( Or very little water.) and the cooler temperature should do the rest & I would have blooms ( Hopefully ) on my pachs. next year.

Now.....  They all came from the same plant. Would that mean that they would be no good to pollinate one another?

I use all plastic but that is just because i got a huge bulk deal from a closing nursery. I've used clay and never thought that it'd be easier to check the moisture but uarewotueat is right, i think clay looks better for cacti too.

Clay pots dry put a hell of a lot faster than plastic,so that's mainly what I use, especially for my Lophs.

maybe. they probably need to be a bit taller than that before they flower though...

no good to pollinate if they are clones of the same plant.

clay dries, which means clay also dries the tips of the roots....and with things like lophs thats where all the root hairs are, so a lot more die.  unless you are in a cold/wet area, i wouldn't think about clay jsut for the reason of root tip problems and slow growers.  Lophophora dont throw out a cm of root everyday, so its important not to lose too much, in my opinion.

but this is one of those areas that will see much disagreement, like top or bottom watering, or when to repot like your otehr thread.  everyone has a good way that works, just try and figure out a way that works for you.

aside from plant health, consider dropping plastic vs clay.  carrying etc.  i like plastic (the thick black ones) cause they dont break, they dont get all f'd in the sun (like those cheap brown plastic cup things), and they come in more sizes/shapes for WAY less money.

Depends on your climate and your soil mix first, then the species planted, your watering habits, etc.  Clay is definitely more expensive.  Clay is probably better for the species that can't handle much water, plastic for the rest.  Clay dries out faster, that can be a good thing or a bad thing.  Plastic is good if it's thick.

I don´t like black plastic because it just heats too much in the sun it may end up cooking the rootball. Once I unpotted one Pilosocereus from a black plastic pot that was in the sun - I could see the steam coming out of the rooball. It was furious.

They´re ok as long as they don´t stay in full sun here.
